Darynda Jones' successfully captures the right voice of the Young Adult audience

Darynda Jones' successfully captures the right voice of the Young Adult audience. The voice is fun and mature, light and heavy. Her teenagers have real conversations that sound like teenagers, not like adults in teenage bodies. It is a good thing that Death, Doom, and Detention will be published next year because I'm already hankering for a little more Jared and Lorelei. 2 people found this helpful.

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy―terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach―comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.

I have long been a fan of the Charley Davidson books written by this author, so I took a chance on this series as well. As expected, it was another outstanding offering that I absolutely loved! The author is all about relationships, and she does them so very well! The paranormal aspects give us lots of surprises as the reader learns of the abilities and identities of the main characters. It’s a fascinating journey and the backstory is revealed while the suspense carries the reader eagerly forward into the main story line.

Initially Jared is tasked with a job that he doesn’t carry through with and that causes him to be stuck where he is… in high school with Lorelei and her friends. So many things happen that will keep you on the edge of your seat! There is never a dull moment from start to finish! The humor interspersed throughout is perfect and a trademark of this talented author. You will love these books once you start reading them. Definitely highly recommended!

Death and the Girl Next Door had action, adventure, the supernatural, mystery, friendship, love, and danger. If you like books about angels then you should like this one, but be prepared it's not what you think. There are nice little twists about the book and it has a character that isn't really talked about to much books.

I love the Trio of Lorelei, Brooklyn and Glitch. They do not really go by the typical book version of a group of friends. Nothing happens, like lie and betrayal, like when there is a fight and everyone has to make up and come together. Lorelei, Brooklyn, and Glitch are true friends, that joke together, follow each other on adventures, scheme together, and support each other no matter what. They truly love each other.

The group as individuals have very similar traits that can be described as funny, spunky, kind, and smart. That why they can all get along so well. Then enters Cameron and Jared who add to the group. They have the supernatural element and they are gorgeous, so you can't go wrong there.

No this is not a love triangle Lorelei has only one love interest. I really do like this couple mash up. I really think that Lorelei is really suited for him. I think another pairing is going to happen with two other characters in book 2, so I can't wait to see that happen.

The ending was a total shock. I didn't see that coming and I am curious to see how this is going to play out. I already have book 2 and I will be getting book 3. I look forward to reading more.

I really enjoyed this book and found it really hard to put down! I am a fan of Ms. Jones writing, having read all her Charley Davidson books. I was looking for anything else she may have written, and found this series. I was a tad skeptical because it's for teens, but I thought I may as well try it. I'd started my first teen series with Kresley Cole's Arcana Chronicles and was pleasantly surprised, so I had high hopes. I was not disappointed! I guess if an author's writing appeals to you, it may not matter so much what they write. The book is funny and sweet and you can't help rooting for the protagonists. One thing I found that kept distracting me in the early going was how much the character of Jared (Azrael) seemed to be ripped from the Charley Davidson books. He's almost a carbon copy of Reyes (Rey'aziel). Even their "real" names are similar. I was able to tamp down the comparison compulsion by the end of the book, but still. Nevertheless, it's well worth a read, even if like me, you're well (in my case, really, really well) past your teens!

I enjoyed Darynda Jones' first venture into YA fiction. The characters made the story for me. Lorelei has a unique and funny voice. Her interactions with her best friends Brooke and Glitch were both funny and strong illustrations of the love and friendship between them.

The story begins when the school's designated loner Cameron Lusk starts stalking Lorelei. Naturally, the friends debate and decide what they should do about it. When a new boy arrives at the school the tensions between Cameron and Jared escalate. Lorelei is immediately drawn to the new guy especially since she has already seen him a in vision fighting monsters.

When Jared saves Lorelei from being killed by a hit and run driver, the course of history changes. Jared is better known as Azrael, the Angel of Death, and he was sent to cause her death, not prevent it. However, something about her, draws him and makes him give up what he should do to preserve her life.

The story gets more complex as Lorelei learns some of the secrets of her past and learns the things her grandparents have been keeping from her. This is the beginning book in a series and is a very promising start.
