Ann's portrayal of Andrew is so realistic, it's as if she is in this 12-year-old's head. This story has everything: adventure, danger, a touch of magic and a love story which spans a century. I recommend this book unreservedly to the young and the young at heart.

Just finished Ann Harth's latest book; 'The Art of Magic' and highly recommend it. I loved the main character - he's endearing and vulnerable but also strong - a complete boy. As a primary teacher I found that the book had heaps of strong points for engaging young readers - boys and girls alike - there's lots of action but that comes with a nice balance of emotion and insight. The book covers several themes including facing loss and change and bullies, just to name a few. A really good read and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to my students!

What a wonderful story! The writer places you inside the active mind of an adolescent boy coming to grips with loss and his future, learning about friendship and love along the way. In a tale rich with detail, scenes are painted quickly, in vibrant color and detail, with enough daily adventure to move the story along at a fast pace. Great use of foreshadowing that leads the reader to predict the next turn in the tale, sometimes correctly and more often with surprising twists that only enhance the excitement. This is really a charming book, and a quick read, for anyone from grade school to the grave. Truly enchanting! I think it would make a marvelous movie!

"The Art of Magic" is a beautifully written book that quietly examines all of the truamatic emotions adolesence can evoke. Ann Harth manages to bring into focus the painful sometimes unbearable fallout of grief and humiliation while at the same time, illuminating hope. Her characters are believable and endearing and will win the heart of adolescents many of whom will be experiencing the same feelings. The icing on the cake is the original and engaging story that serves as packaging. Ann is a wonderful writer and an engaging storyteller and I look forward to more of her work.

There is almost everything in this book - a death, grief and growing, poverty, friendships broken and re-formed, a Mad and sad artist, bullies and chases, history, art, mystery, magic and sic fi - and you don't realise it until the end, but it is also a warm and beautiful, though unlikely, love story, that just sneaks up on you.

Ann Harth has done it again with another lively and unconventional tale yet managing to weave through it the recognisable everyday in all our lives; bullies, fears, longings, neighbourliness, braveness and even the safe-event of searching through libraries as a source of wonder. Who else can freshen our tired language? Well done, Ann! But please don't rest your pen for too long! Cheers...
A delightful heartwarming story with plenty of action. Max is believable and engaging and you can't help falling in slightly love with him. Andrew is a sensitive well meaning boy who chooses to do the right thing. A real page turner with beautiful writing. Can't wait for the next story by Ann Harth!
