It's the same tactic that Stevenson used in Treasure Island, but to very different results. Stevenson's adventure story has its moments of darkness, but this is a scarier version with rougher stakes.

The long journey of the Neptune is well underway. Lady Vivian is counting on her associate Long John Silver to take control of the expedition. But Silver doesn't have enough men to take over the ship, and Captain Hastings doesn't trust him. In the close quarters of a tall ship, tensions rise; betrayal looms. Blood will be spilled before the vessel reaches the Amazon, and a single act of routine brutality will throw the Neptune into a maelstrom of death. Ages 12+.

This wasn't quite as good as the first volume but it's still excellent. Xavier Dorison keeps the plot going this time locked entirely on a ship as skull duggery and general bad behavior from all sides. What's interesting is that Dorison feels no need to paint certain characters in a good light and seems actively unconcerned with the audience perception of characters. Seriously, certain characters don't act out of established character but they certainly act on their worst traits. They're still like-able but it's a bit like watching your beloved toddler break a window. The only thing I wasn't all that crazy about with this issue is that it feels particularly decompressed. It makes sense in that it's setup for the future volumes but I won't lie it's the least favorite part of any comic for me. Don't get me wrong. It's not American style 6 issues wait half a year story lines that could be told in an issue or sometimes even less, which DC's current bi-weekly setup has been an absolute blessing in the sense that those 6 issue arcs aren't nearly as brutal now.

Illustration is still excellent. They remind me of a more ornate and color oriented Frank Miller. The stuff he's doing with lighting in this issue is pretty fantastic. He also gets to draw lots of action sequences and again he excels at it.

Excited for the next volume which promises quite a bit more wildness and a lot more varied settings than just a ship full of ugly pirates.

The voyage begins. The crew, full of schemers, is now on it's way to find the wayward Lord Byron Hastings and his alleged location of a mountain of gold. Not enough questions are being asked, however, and his brother is a hard task master to the crew. Silver's plot is sound but can he keep his men together and will he betray the Lady Vivian's trust. This is the second installment of a beautifully drawn and remarkably entertaining read. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Not being an expert on the period and times it's hard to say there aren't any written anachronisms but if I spent my time worrying about that the fun would probably dim, but just a little.
Overall, this is one of best series I've read in a very long time. The artist/storyteller's passion for the subject matter, characters and setting are impossible to miss. It's so good I hope it's never made into a film because it would be hard to get it as right as it looks and reads here.

I enjoyed the art in this book so much that I also bought the larger deluxe French version. Mathieu Lauffray's pen and ink along with watercolor is excellent! The story is very well done by Xavier Dorison. It is the Long John Silver you know, and yet a whole new, totally different adventure. Well done!

Excellent series;the story is very engrossing & the art by Mathieu Mauffray is outstanding.Unfortunately, the authors leave you hanging after the 3rd volume & have not finished the story. A shame really, would've made an outstanding movie as well.I would've gave it 5 stars except for the NOT FINISHING THE STORY thing.
