William Bradford was born to Alice Briggs and William Bradford in Austerfield . Doherty, Kieran (1999). William Bradford: Rock of Plymouth. Brookfield, Connecticut: Twenty-First Century Books.

William Bradford was born to Alice Briggs and William Bradford in Austerfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, and was baptized on March 19, 1589/90. The family possessed a large farm and were considered wealthy and influential in a time when most of their countrymen were farmers of modest means. Bradford's journal also contributed to the book Mourt's Relation, which was written in part by Edward Winslow and published in England in 1622.

Like Gary Schmidt in William Bradford (Eerdmans, 1999), Doherty quotes extensively from Bradford's own history, Of Plymouth Plantation. He obviously has a great deal of respect and admiration for Bradford, but is careful to point out weaknesses and treats potentially controversial incidents evenhandedly.

Who was William Bradford? It's easy to call up an image of a Pilgrim Father - think of any Thanksgiving picture you've seen since elementary school - black and white clothes, big brass buckles; a rugged, healthy man looking bravely toward the future in a new land. In fact, that image doesn't accurately describe Bradford or any of the Pilgrims. Pilgrims wore very colorful clothes at times, and we know that buckles didn't exist until much later

I love this true and accurate account of the early pilgrims, who suffered and sacrificed so much to lay the ground work for the founding of America. The book looks brand new and it’s sad it was “decommissioned” from a public school just because it teaches about the foundations of this country...Faith in God and the importance of following Gods laws to estabilsh a free and prosperous people!!

This is truly a book that every American should read. It tells in a marvelous readable style the true story of one of our greatest American heroes. The Pilgrim story is one that has been relegated in its importance in our revisionist history books, especially in our public schools. Knowing our true history and giving honor to our heroes is vital to our strength as a nation. This book accomplishes these goals.
