Using the award-winning question-and-answer format of the How-To series, this must-have guide provides programmers with everything they need to use this powerful tool to write professional programs and solve complex problems quickly. Personally I have bought many books about C++ Builder and this one interested me a lot. I really consider this book a reference one, not one for learning the programming aspects of C++ Builder.

On your FormCreate function do something like the following: void fastcall TForm1::FormCreate(TObject Sender) { EnumFonts (Canvas- Handle, NULL, (FONTENUMPROC) EnumProc, (LPARAM) ComboBox1) ; ComboBox1- ItemIndex ComboBox1- Items- IndexOf (Memo1- Font- Name) ; } This should load the fonts into the combo box. The first comes from Borland C++ Builder How-To: The Definitive C++ Builder Problem-Solver by John Miano, Tom Cabanski, and Harold Howe. They show some code for making a form, in this case a splash screen, at startup. They put their code in the Form1. This is the C++ source created by Builder automatically.

C++Builder How-To: The Definitive C++Builder Problem Solver, Miano, . Cabanski, T. and Howe, H. ( 1997), Waite Group, pp. 822, ISBN 157169109X Somewhat dated, this book still contains many useful how-to's and techniques for C++Builder programmers. When it was first published, it was the C++Builder book to own. Unfortunately, it only covers features of Borland C++Builder 3, many of which have changed in later versions of C++Builder. However, this book is still practical.

Provides instruction on how to use C++ Builder and solve a variety of real life scripting problems along with warnings, enhancements, alternative solutions as well as actual code. Paper. DLC: C++ (Computer program language) CD-ROM Included.

The book should have been titled "Advanced Windows API How-To using C++ Builder" or something else more appropriate. The examples are good but complex. If you're a novice with CPPB this book will be totally useless to you.

Excellent reference book with many good examples.

This book is full of the answers in plain English to those items 'they' assume you know. It is nice to have information that is not geared to the 'professional programmer' but to those of us who like to program.

You should have a basic knowledge of C++Builder before you
get this book. Very specific solutions are given to very specific
programming applications. The book has some wonderful source
code for practical programming. I've seen several programs in this
book imitated and offered as shareware on the internet.
Using various Win32 API functions with C++Builder is demonstrated
and the examples are easy to follow. The book's format sets up a
programming problem then shows the techniques used for solving
the problem. The book does not cover every aspect of C++Builder
programming (None of them do) but much insight can be gained from this book.
I prefer this writing style over the other C++Builder books I have read

This book has a unique, how do I do this approach. You can quickly look up answers for your problems. The only quivers I have about the book are that sometimes the examples tell you too much and you have to weed through the code to make it work for your needs. Programming examples are kind of sloppy in some circumstances. For instance, the section about restricting the type of information inputted into edit fields. The example code made use of sloppy goto statements and was long and unnecessary. I rewrote the code in much more precise, readable code without any gotos whatsoever. Unfortunately, even though my code works exactly as his code (I tried them both) it doesn't work quite the way I want it to. It does restrict the user from entering non-numeric data into the field, but it shows the entry anyway and you must backspace to erase before going on. I wanted it to not display it and not advance the cursor postion either. Besides those two minor points, the book is great. Comes in very handy at times.

I will recommend this book to the people knowing C++ and the api well if you need to make windows-applications and would like to use Builder to do it. During my final year project, this book has been absolutely essential. I've found very nice solutions to advanced problems. Without it, I would have had severe trouble. Although it covers alot, it doesn't cover everything - there is still need for some fiddeling around. Conclusion : highly recommended for intermediate to advanced programmers.
This book is everything a beginner, intermediate (and in some cases even an experienced) BCB user needs right by his/her computer. I found many solutions for problems I had as a beginner and intermediate developer in this book. The structure of the chapters is excellent and well thought. Explanations before AND after the writer implements the solutions are very practical. After you (as the reader) apply what you just read, some additional questions arise and the writer also discusses these types of questions.

Sadly I must say that (about) 30% of the book is useless today (2005). A simple example is the splash screen example (the one I can remember right now). 50% of the example is still applicable today, but the rest can be done faster/easier if you're using BCB's 4,5 or 6, by just changing some properties.

I would be delighted if Mr. Miano (et al.) could produce an updated version of this book, I would surely buy it as soon as it came out. "Borland C++ Builder: the Definitive C++ Builder Problem Solver," is (for me) the best "fast-reference" book written for BCB.

I gave it 4 stars, because of its somewhat outdated, but to the beginner programmers out there who are contemplating buying this book, GO AHEAD it is worth it! It's worth 5 stars.
