Upscale Nine-Ball Author: Mr Jack H. UPSCALE NINE-BALL Many pool players progress from playing casual EIGHT-BALL with friends to playing in organized leagues. The next most probable step is to play NINE-BALL, and specifically, NINE-BALL tournaments

Upscale Nine-Ball Author: Mr Jack H. The game of NINE-BALL requires some skills not required in EIGHT-BALL, the Push-Out shot is an example more GHT-BALL player that wants to become proficient at the game of NINE-BALL.

UPSCALE NINE-BALL is intended for intermediate to advanced pool players. Entire chapters are devoted to shots and situations associated specifically with the game of NINE-BALL.

Does a particular shooting accomplishment, on one table, have universal meaning? Not really; for example, it is much easier to run nine balls on a table with large pockets than to run nine balls on a table that has small pockets. Until now the relitive difficulty of pocketing balls had to be described subjectively. This book describes an objective way of evaluating relative pocket difficulty (Chapter 2).

Have you ever wondered how your NINE-BALL skills compare to those of your friends across the country? Are you playing better today than you did five years ago? Do you play better with an 18-ounce stick than with a 20-ounce stick? Without an objective way of evaluating your game skills, you can only guess at the snswers to these questions. By using the KOEHLER SKILL RATING SYSTEM (Chapter 18) you can answer these questions objectively.

This book describes, in detail, all the various handicapping systems. The value of each type of handicap varies with the skill of the players. You can now determine exactly how much each handicap is worth to you as an individual. The "skip handicap system" (Chapter 19) is a new system that can be fine-tuned to an extent that has never befor been possible.

I'm an avid reader of sports books (mostly pool and golf) and try to learn all I can about the sports I participate in. So when a new book comes out, I can't resist, hoping to gain a few more morsels of information.
This book is good - it covers fundamentals, typical shots, english, position play, banks, the break, safeties, etc. - all the standard stuff, but with emphasis on the game of 9-ball. However, there is nothing here that can't be found in other texts (Byrne's books, Phil Capelle's Play Your Best Pool). Many references are made to information in Koehler's other book (Science of Pocket Billiards) - luckily I own this book as well, otherwise some of the truly interesting information would have been lost. In addition, the last few chapters of the book are devoted to the author's own handicapping system - great details are given on the system, detailed charts, etc. Even if this was the best handicapping system ever, the average reader could care less.
Parts of the book that are worth reading include the chapter on the break and some of the analysis of pro statistics gathered from viewing hundreds of matches. The break chapter examines the break in detail, showing probable paths for every ball in the rack, impacts of gaps, etc. The statistics section shows some interesting analysis for male and female professionals on things like frequency of 9-balls made on the break, percentage of games won after a push out, after safeties, etc. Numerous charts are presented, and some of the statistics are indeed interesting.
If you want one good book on 9-ball, buy either Byrne or Capelle - you'll get a better book on fundamentals, good solid sections on 9-ball, and other general information as well. If you like to read several sources to compare information, or are looking for information with a "scientific" spin, then this might be a worthwhile purchase.

This is the best book available on Nine Ball. Even the experienced player will benefit from studying this book. I consider myself a decent Nine Ball player. But after reading this book I was amazed at how much I had not known. I discovered that simple things like a push-out shot was actually very complicated if you want to do it right. The safety is another shot that gets complicated when you become aware of all the variables.
What surprises (amuses) me most is that I now recognize when my opponent makes the same mistakes that I use to make. It gives me a good feeling to be a step ahead of my opponent -- even if I lose the game. I would recommend buying this book to anyone interested in Nine Ball.

Anyone that plays Nine Ball will eventually (if not continuously) be challenged to a game by other Nine Ball players. If you don't know how to handicap your game you're in for big trouble. If you can't handicap intelligently, you will loose no matter how good you play the game. Koehler is the first and only author ever to analyze all the Nine Ball handicapping systems. Upscale Nine Ball is worth the price just for the chapter on handicapping alone. This means you get the other twenty chapters for free.
