Today’s hurried life entraps us at every level . We’ve packed away our passions to let the minutiae of life take over. The book then explores three essential practices, or pauses, that are integral to healthful living.

Today’s hurried life entraps us at every level: from the early morning bolt out the door, to increasing workloads with reduced resources, escalating family responsibilities, social obligations, committee meetings, and exercise classes. Chapters on practical (sometimes playful) and spiritual elements follow.

My boyfriend loves it and once he got past thinking it was simple, he said it was really helpful. Buy!

I try to slow down and relax and always look for books with this attitude. Maybe others need this book more than I. However, I found the book filled with some good suggestions and resources to check out. If you are looking at ways to incorporate a better quality of life then this may be one book to add among others to your shelf. Some people may not like that it doesn't take a total back to basics move towards simplicity. She suggests adding some small indulgences in your routine such as a cup of coffee or treats. Those who can't afford this approach may not see the value. However, other suggestions are inexpensive.

Even if you don't incorporate many suggestions from the book, it is a thought starter to living a more balanced life.

So, I buy this book because I'm swamped. I work 1.5 jobs, and the "1" job in that equation is more like 2.5 jobs. I have a teen, a 'tween, a husband, three cats, a large dog, turtles, a kajillion unfinished knitting/needlework projects, too many unwatched movies & unread books in my collections, and a messy house. I purchased this book because I was hoping to get some insight on how to slow down without de-railing this freight train. This book was listed in the Virtues Shop from the Virtues Project, so I thought it would be a great read.

The chapters are short, which is great. Easy to take in one sitting, they have a lot of great resources.

Aside from that ... I wasn't impressed.

While the Resources are great, I wasn't looking for resources. I was looking for practices that would help me re-assess what I was doing or where I was going, and why they were good for me/helped me slow down. The good news was that the book didn't give me psychological dissertation on why I feel the need to keep myself so busy or why running forward at breakneck speed isn't good for my family, and I was thankful for that! However, this book was short on inspiration and BIG on...

IDEAS THAT WILL INVOLVE ME EVEN MORE IN PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, GROUPS, AND EVEN MORE CRAP THAT WILL MAKE ME CRAZY/IER.

Taking my daughters to a nursing home to paint old ladies' nails? GREAT idea. Would love for them to make a mentor friend in an octogenarian and get insight on life and listen to all the cool stories she had to tell. Excellent! I can't think of a reason why not to do this.

EXCEPT WHAT ABOUT MY OWN NAILS? Seriously, i was hoping this book would help me assess my own crazily involved life and therefore give ME time to get MY nails done by someone else for a change (or, done at all!). Selfish? YES. Absolutely! Perhaps this book could help me let go of something that is unnecessary in my life and give me time to relax in a massage chair while I get a mani/pedi? Or help me find time for that? I don't need the pressure of getting involved with a nursing home and then scheduling myself & my children and then having to cancel when someone gets sick/has a test/the oven catches on fire. Dear God.

After finishing my copy, I'm not really not sure where the "pause" button is on this book, so don't buy it unless you're looking for more things to be "inspired" to do. Ugh.

If you're like me and almost everyone I know, when asked what you would most like, the answer is an extra 12 hours a day. We're all overbooked and overcommitted, and forget to follow simple psychological and spiritual common sense: slow down, replinish the soul, repair ourselves and our souls.

Filled with inspirational, common sense and psychologically sound advice, Pause inspires the reader to stop reading and do one of the multitude of good suggestions to get back to ourselves. Its a great book to read a small chapter at a time and let yourself follow your heart at the end of the chapter and do something that is kind to yourself and to the world. You will feel better fast.
