The material is organized in a logical progression from the conservation of mass, the conservation of energy, and the second law.
Redirected from Thermodynamic). Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with heat and temperature, and their relation to energy, work, radiation, and properties of matter. The behavior of these quantities is governed by the four laws of thermodynamics which convey a quantitative description using measurable macroscopic physical quantities, but may be explained in terms of microscopic constituents by statistical mechanics

Black hole thermodynamics. The second law of thermodynamics requires that black holes have entropy. A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking, Bantam Books, 1988. In physics, black-hole thermodynamics is the area of study that seeks to reconcile the laws of thermodynamics with the existence of black-hole event horizons. If black holes carried no entropy, it would be possible to violate the second law by throwing mass into the black hole. The increase of the entropy of the black hole more than compensates for the decrease of the entropy carried by the object that was swallowed. Majumdar, Parthasarathi (1999).
