Johnson’s history is a reinterpretation of American history from the first .

Johnson’s history is a reinterpretation of American history from the first settlements to the Clinton administration. The book has new and often trenchant things to say about every aspect and period of America’s past, says Johnson, and I do not seek, as some historians do, to conceal my opinions. This is an in-depth portrait of a great people, from their fragile origins through their struggles for independence and nationhood, their heroic efforts and sacrifices to deal with the 'organic sin’ of slavery and the preservation of the Union to its explosive economic growth and emergence as a world power and its sole superpower.

The book of. Illusions. Man has not one and the same life. The book was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press eleven years ago this past March. At least one of them wouldn’t have fallen seven miles through the sky, and I wouldn’t have been left alone in a house that was supposed to have four people in it. There were other things, of course, other contingencies to brood about and torture myself with, and I never seemed to tire of walking down those same dead-end roads.

Literacy Through the Book Arts is a shared journey for those who wish to encourage originality in their own or the minds of others The Creative Advantage Book: Unleash Your Creativity And Change The World!.

Even though this is written by Professor Paul Johnson whose career is dedicated to teaching bookmaking as a guide to inventive literacy among children 3-18yo, each of his books (A Book of One's Own: Developing Literacy Through Making Books,Pictures & Words Together: Children Illustrating and Writing Their Own Books,New Pop-Up Paper Projects: Step-by-step paper engineering for all ages) invites writers of all ages to explore personal creativity through clear instruction and an architecture for imagination.

Johnson's writing is a literate pleasure 84 Charing Cross Road, like the Harry Potter books published in UK and Canada, not the diluted versions available in the US. Johnson temptingly invites our latent ingenuity to soar rather than draining originality by seduction into someone else's dream (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Groundhog Day (Special 15th Anniversary Edition),Inception (Two-Disc Edition) [Blu-ray]).

Johnson's exercises are gradually phased to introduce book concepts: paper manipulation, imposition, limitation by margin, number of pages, three dimensional pop-up surprises, 100s of variations on making a book from a single sheet of paper, pagination, dedication, colophon, cover and back-cover conventions (including biography, bar codes, price and quotes from reviewers).

Writing prompts are wide ranging clever inspirations to sprout inventive word maps. His explanation of story arc through book writing allows open curiosity, satisfies the need for adventure while introducing safety and closure.

Book conventions for illustration are introduced: coming from left vs. going toward right, perspective, time, repetition, use of lettering as a story-telling illustration, a separate adventure appearing subtly within illustrations alone separate from the written storyline, scansion, two-page spread.

Distinction between calligraphy lettering (for cover title) vs. printing gently appears as part of the bookmaking process rather than didactic, pragmatic, dry boring iteration.

Paul Johnson fertilizes invention as a seed for writing safely for young and old alike.

5 star, exorbitantly, extravagantly recommended for writers of all ages.

I loved the samples and illustrations but the text was sluggish and cumbersome.
I think it could have been edited to half it's word count.
My favorite things were the student samples and showing how the forms could be expanded.
I took copious notes on that part.

This is a fantastic teaching resource. There so many great projects to try and all the children I've made books with have been thrilled with their results.

An excellent presentation of the holistic learning experience book arts can be for the child. Creating a book calls upon skills that will stand the child in good stead throughout life: planning, collaborating, discussing, consensus building. Also, technological, writing, visual, and design skills are challenged and strengthened.
