When I got this freebie from Kindle I did not know it was an Erotic Romance. Not that I still would not have picked it up, it's just that I was rather shocked when I started reading. My shock soon gave way to a rather bored feeling when the story just seemed to stagnate and slow down. I was almost ready to put it into the "Did Not Finish" collection folder but I persevered and ended up reading until 5am. The story took off like a gunshot and I could not put it down.

The setting is Shanghai in the late 1800's and it is brought to life by author Jade Lee. The customs, the misogynistic Chinese men, the equally misogynistic English men, the differences in attitudes of Western and Eastern women, the class differences in China and the culture all are illuminated by this accomplished author. She shows the deep seated, racist bias that existed between Westerners and Easterners, each viewing the other as barbarians.

The sex is Tantric to a strong degree and actually the relationship of the H/h is strongly based on connecting through sensual stimulation. That the heroine could love her slave master is something that is quite understandable in this novel.

I highly recommend this book to those who are not offended by explicit, sensual sex scenes.

I loved the first forty percent of this book. Maybe it's just me, but there was something really HOT about Lydia's captivity to Ru Shan. Then other things happened that ruined the hotness for me. (Yes, that's vague, but I don't want to give spoilers.) Subsequent events seemed a bit implausible and some of the chemistry dissipated. Others might appreciate her change in circumstance more than me. I'm a little twisted. Having said that, the mythology was somewhat interesting. Prepare yourself now, though, because you are going to read euphemistic terms like "jade dragon", "cinnabar gate", and "yang fire" over and over and over again. And then there's the crayzay ending. Sigh. I wish I would have been prepared for the super-fantastical aspect of the ending. Had I seen it coming, it wouldn't have been the eye-rolling experience that it was.

See, I said I was torn. :) I liked parts enough to read it in an afternoon, but other parts make me unsure if I want to continue the series. I probably will, though.

I have read other works by this author, but none have struck me with their originality as this one did. It's my understanding that this is the first of a series and I may just have to pick this series up because the content, characters and settings were something I had not explored much before and rarely in a romance. The examination of the history of Chinese/British relations was very fascinating, the way the cultures both viewed the other as barbarians and savages. I also found the author's exploration of the path of the Tao to be very interesting, especially as it relates so much to the core of the story and the main character's search for spiritual enlightenment.

Our heroine, Lydia, sets forth several weeks earlier than planned from London, due to the death of her father, to go to Shanghai to be with her fiance and surprise him by arriving early, very much looking forward to marrying him. She's been studying Chinese with a retired missionary, but she's dismayed to find she's learned the wrong dialect for where she's landed. The captain of the ship offers her a ride and drops her off at a "boarding house" where she's given drugged tea, robbed of all her possessions and sold as a slave by the madam of the bordello.

Lydia is bought by our hero, Ruan Shan Cheng, a prosperous fabric merchant who is looking for a white woman with the right kind of energy to help balance his so that he can atone for a past bad act that haunts him and balance his energies to continue on the road of the Tao. His teacher assures him that their yin and yang are the right balance. Lydia, of course, fights him at first. She doesn't understand what he's talking about, she's kept prisoner in a tiny apartment and fed "cleansing foods" she just wants to go to her fiance, since no one has touched her, she's still pure, so they can still get married. Ruan patiently explains and then demonstrates what he means. He promises he doesn't want sex, just energy from her, and Lydia is a little bit curious. And then more curious.....

What they embark on is a cultural exchange like no other and a meeting of the minds that helps them to realize Ruan's spiritual goals. But there are a lot of steps between beginning and end, not all of them pleasant. I hope you take the time to embark on a journey to Shanghai, it was quite an interesting journey. Kudos to Ms.Lee.

Heat factor hot.

more like a 3.5. I didn't hate or love this story.
This was definitely different. A different outlook on sex and religion.
This is a hard book to write a review for. Its your typical woman trusts the wrong person, gets put into Brothel, man sees woman, buys woman then your story. But its much more than that.
Lydia is a strong Englishwoman in a foreign country, she tries to stay true to herself.
Ru Shan is a Chinese man with traditional beliefs and another "practice". He finds out that some of his beliefs are not true, things he has been taught for years are wrong. But he tries to stay true to those beliefs. Ru Shan also practices Taoist, a different type of sexual "feeling".
There is some sexual parts in this book, but nothing like what most are used to reading.
So hard to put into words what I feel and thought.
I felt for Lydia, she went through so much. She tried hard to understand the culture and even tried to adjust herself to it, but fell short due to lack of communication. That is my opinion, others might see it differently.
Ru Shan, tried to be "the Cheng Mountain" and hold the ENTIRE family on his shoulders, yes that was custom in this time period; but he also tried to be someone else, learn and accept new things/ideas.
