No, she& determined to marry a man who loves her. But just as she& about to accept the perfect marriage proposal from the man she wants, the rakish Earl of Featherstone interrupts and ruins everything, including her reputation, with his smoldering kiss"-Page 4 of cover.

But after a week had passed with no sign of him, she had come to think perhaps he had finally given up on reconciling, and that was when the unthinkable had happened. She began to miss him. y at night, sitting by the fire as she remembered those passionate moments in the library at Grosvenor Square. She’d even begun to dream about him, about his kiss and his touch, an aggravating development, and one that if he ever learned of it, would be excessively mortifying

A Royal Pain...

The illegitimate daughter of a prince and a notorious courtesan, Lucia has been confined to schools and convents for most of her life. But that hasn't stopped her from causing one scandal after another. Exasperated, her royal father decides that his exquisite hellion of a daughter must be married immediately. And Sir Ian Moore, Britain's most proper diplomat, is the perfect man to choose her a groom.

Diplomacy, not matchmaker, is Ian's forte, but he vows to get Lucia married off as soon as possible so that he may return to his real duties. Yet, despite an abundance of very eager, worthwhile candidates, none is a match for Lucia's spirit and fire. And the more time Ian spends with the infuriating beauty, the more reluctant he is to marry her off. Could it be that he has already found Lucia the perfect husband...and it is Ian himself?

I truly enjoy reading about opposites falling in love and thought this book would be a bright spot in my day as I relished the idea of the stiff-rumped Sir Ian Moore, brother to bad boy, Dylan Moore of His Every Kiss (Guilty Series), being ramrodded into helping the feisty naughty, beautiful, Italian Lucia find a husband in London.

**Spoilers** But... I didn't relish this book even though all the possibilities were there - just out of the reach of the reader. Sir Ian remained stiff and unmovable during most of the book no matter how hard Lucia tried to catch his attention. In fact, his attention was caught, but not acted upon for most of the book. When he did act, he basically violated her twice - once in the carriage and eventually in Tremore's conservatory the night of her "choosing her husband" ball. Yes, she enjoyed what happened in the carriage, but he never even escorted her out of the carriage and then refused to go around her for several days. She was an innocent for crying out loud. She needed to be held and given some kind words.

Then on the night of her ball where she was to choose a husband from among the three candidates for her hand, Sir Ian refuses to attend and just waits in the conservatory. She comes out and attempts to seduce him, but once he gets going, it's basically a rape. Then, he left her sore and bleeding without any words of love or commitment for three weeks while he went home to Devonshire to get his home ready for her because they had no choice but to get married. Tremore and/or Dylan should have taken a whip to his rear end. Even the marriage and the wedding breakfast were solemn affairs and when she tried to take the blame - well, that was simply over the top. Ugh! This isn't the way to get a person like me dialed into a book. I kept hoping and hoping for something good to happen and saw that my Kindle was registering 75% finished, then 84% and so forth. Yes, during the last few pages, things come together. Too little, too late.
Spoiled brat. Unpleasant spoiled brat. As an oft-ignored, shuffled around, illegitimate daughter of a prince, she certainly had reason to rebel. But her total self-absorption was just too much.

And Ian is left without his diplomatic career, which had been his life,.....for her? Poor guy.

I generally really like Ms. Guhrke's novels, and this one was certainly well-written. It's just that Lucia is a brat. Not a hellion...a brat.

To go from THE MARRIAGE BED to this was almost surreal. I know some reviewers strongly disliked THE MARRIAGE BED. To me, though, it was the most profound exploration of the mores of the era and the psychological makeup of the protagonists that I have ever read in fiction.
Laura Lee Gurkhe's writing is erratic, and this is an example of a middling effort by an author who can scale the romantic heights, as with And Then He Kissed Her, or fall to smarmy depths, as with the "blackmail as romantic gesture" novel, The Marriage Bed (Avon Romantic Treasure). This novel falls somewhere in between her best and worst.

The plot is promising -- the headstrong, love-starved illegitimate child of a king is being forced to marry by her father. His majesty chooses a diplomatic aide to screen potential husbands and get the annoying kid off of daddy's hands. Of course, the staid diplomat is just what the spoiled quasi-royal brat needs.

This could have been a exciting Taming of the Shrew-type romance. When the heroine started out so whiny and annoying, and the hero was so calm and controlling, I was hopeful. But no fireworks or sexual heat ever entered the plot.

Unfortunately, the heroine never became likable, she just stayed bad-tempered. There was no taming, and the eventual "love match" was unbelievable, because neither character ever developed interesting personality traits -- both were underwritten and two-dimensional.

Buy this used, or borrow it from a friend. It's not horrible, but it's just okay. Definitely not a keeper.
I don't always love Laura Guhrke's books because I like to read to escape reality and sometimes they have a bit of harsh reality that offends my romantic sensabilities. But this one I truly enoyed. The heroine is headstrong and opinionated beauty who is the illigitimate daughter of a Prince, who is determined to marry her off before she ruins the union already planned between his legitimate daughter and an Englishman. When Lucia runs away to England to live with her mom, her father recruits an English diplomat to pick a man for Lucia. The trouble is Lucia doesn't want the eligible British nobility, she wants the handsome and manipulative diplomat, who is entirely unsuitable for the illigitimate daugter of a prince. How far will Lucia go to get her way? Read the book to find out.

I've said before that I love novels with strong female leads, and this novel is a perfect example of that. It's a keeper in my library.
