Later novels, such as Robert Falconer and Lilith, show a distaste for the idea that God's electing love is limited to some and denied to others. Especially in his Unspoken Sermons he shows a highly developed theology. He took his degree at the University of Aberdeen, and then went to London, studying at Highbury College for the Congregational ministry.

One of the best of many great MacDonald books! When I finished my first reading, I immediately read it again. First to understand the story line; second, to ponder and absorb the many lessons to be drawn from it. It has deeply personal and autobiographical segments from MacDonald. A question faced and answered by Robert Falconer, the main character, was one which I personally confronted on my second reading. With a dinner group, I raised that very question to the entire group. As each individual answered for herself/himself, it became the most enduring and memorable dinner we have ever shared. Undertake this book not as just a good read, but rather as a potentially deep and rewarding experience in self-awareness. If you do, it will be enduring and memorable for you as well.

I love the way MacDonald develops his characters. They grow physically and spiritually, and MacDonald doesn't necessarily feel the need to tie everything up with a neat bow at the end. Like real life.

Very hard to understand. I dropped it after the first chapter. At least I paid
$0 for the book.

I was introduced to this story 25 years ago through the abridged version by Michael Phillips, for which I am thankful. But the original is infinitely superior. So glad it was available for the Kindle, though I actually read it on my iPhone.

Always appreciate the challenge to spiritual growth laid down by this 19th century novelist.

George MacDonald was a contemporary of Charles Dickens and shared equal popularity in his day. This is a long book but may not seem like it as you start reading it. Be warned: there a lot of Scottish dialect but once you get used to it, you should be able to manage. This is the back story to Falconer, who shows up briefly in "David Elginbrod." He's such a compelling character, we want to know more about him. There's an abridged version, "THe Musician's Quest," that came out in print in the 1980s.

It is Falconer I met in Tutor's First Love - such a fascinating, mysterious, and good-hearted and extremely intelligent character. I had a hard time with the Scottish brogue, but my husband found a dictionary online so I hope to tackle it again one day - he is a wonderful character I hope to learn more about. GMD is a genius at developing characters!
It took some time, but this book endeared itself to me. The message throughout is true. A message that inspires me to give of myself more
