Money & Power (9781606083000) by Jacques Ellul, LaVonne Neff, David W. Gill. Money, he says, is not neutral, something we can use as we like. Instead it is a powerful agent that sets itself against God's kingdom. Tracing the scriptural attitudes toward wealth from Old Testament sacramentalism through New Testament renunciation, he challenges Christians to live by the law of grace and not by the law of the marketplace.

Jacques Ellul was a French philosopher that lived from 1912 until 1994. He was employed as a Professor of History and Sociology at the University of Bordeaux. Like a Louis L’ Amour of deep theology and sociology, Ellul has produced more than 58 books and thousands of articles. But Ellul’s writing is far more profound. This particular work is a deep exploration of the powerful hold money has on human society. Many people today see money as an object of veneration, as something f Jacques Ellul was a French philosopher that lived from 1912 until 1994.

Money is a more complex idea. Money itself almost disappears into the related ideas either of legal tender or of economic wealth and power. Even if the term money is still used in everyday speech, it is rarely used by economists

Money is a more complex idea. Even if the term money is still used in everyday speech, it is rarely used by economists. And even in common parlance, to have money is more likely to mean "to have spending power" (that is, to cam and use income) than "to have a stash of precious metal"-once the only meaning of the phrase. The Problem: Individual or Corporate? We can no longer talk about money without thinking of the total economy.

Tracing attitudes toward wealth from the Old Testament to the New Testament, Jacques Ellul discusses both societal and individual responsibilities related to the use of money and power. Related epub fb2 eBooks: On Freedom, Love, and Power. Keeping Money Safe (Money Power) (Money Power (Rourke)).

I had a copy before and gave it away. Needed another copy to consider once again this prophetic message to Christians everywhere but especially to Mammon saturated America. The chapter on how to teach children about money is well worth the price.

Great book and very thought provoking! Jacques Ellul gets one to examine one's cultural assumptions about our views about money & power!

This is one of the best books you will read on the power of money in our lives and how we can break it. As children, we played a game:"Mother May I?" and if "Mother" didn't give permission, we couldn't do what we wanted to do. All we have done now is change the word to "Dollar" may I? It is quite interesting to be aware of how often "money" makes our decisions. Rather than: Do I need it? Is it valuable? Is it wise?
The book is hard to find, but I would encourage anyone who can find a copy--to read it! And break the power of money!

In this one of many brilliant books by Ellul, he exposes the folly of a purely collective, societal approach, such as that offered by communism, or capitalism. Instead, through a study of various Biblical references in the Old and New Testament, puts the responsibilty on the individual. The new covenant of Jesus is compared to the Old Testament pattern of wealth as a sign of blessing. He examines the teaching of Jesus on God and Mammon. Contemporary models of stewardship are exposed as inadequate. Further, he clearly shows the underlying power money has over a person, despite any feelings of control we may think we have. The teachings of Jesus about giving and trusting provide the path to freedom. We disarm the power of money by giving. Only by God's grace and transforming love are we able to overcome this subtle and insidious power. Highly recommended, especially at a time in our history when many have lost faith in the market.
