My reading interests lately have leaned toward energy healing, Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and near-death subjects. It may be because old age forces one to deal with their own mortality. Over the years I have read numerous books on the subject of near-death experiences but this is the absolutely best book (The Big Book of near-death experiences: the ultimate guide to what happens when we die by P.M.H. Atwater) I have ever read on this topic. This giant 475 page soft cover volume covers the subject of near-death in a very clear and objective way. I found this book hard to put down once I began reading it. This excellent text is organized into 5 parts with a total of 26 chapters. Do not pass up the beginning reviews of this book, the forward or the introduction.

The following is just a sample of the material that is covered in this large volume: Part one deals with the experience/the experiencer. Types of experiences, near-death look-alikes and other material are covered in this section. Part two focuses on the issues afterward when people have a near-death experience. Part three answers some common questions about the near-death experiences. Part four covers taking a leap beyond and how to explain the near-death experiences. The final part (Back down to earth) explains the brain-biology link, but is all the claims true? Integrating the near-death experience, redefining how life is viewed and message for the twenty-first century.

If you are interested in the subject of near-death experiences this is a must book to have for your library.

This book has more information about Near Death Experience that you can imagine! If you never tire of reading about them, this is a good book to get. I think this book was also published as one of those "Complete Idiot's Guide to NDEs" books. It is nicely arranged with boxes off the the side on every page to highlight interesting points.

It is a big book of near death experiences. With three near death experiences, thirty years of research, and thousands of cases P.M.N. Atwater does a good job describing near death experiences. She provides details on the good, the bad, and the ugly for those who have experienced an NDE, their families, and others. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has had an NDE (I have not), for anyone who knows someone who has (I have not), and for anyone else interested in the topic. Her experience, facts, insights, and conclusions would be helpful to all three groups.

This takes up about the first half of the book.

The second half seems to turn attention to the subtitle "The Ultimate guide to what happens when we die." Some of it was interesting and thought provoking. Unfortunately, many of her theories and conclusions are at best a stretch and I think she fails to make a good case on several occasions. I also thought she droned on a bit long on some of her pet theories such as evolutionary change, but you may not mind if you liked her book - Children of the New Millennium.

There are a large number of references throughout the book and in the appendices so the interested reader can check facts and delve deeper in the subject from a variety of authors and researchers.

So I liked the first half - This is a big and excellent book on near death experiences. I learned a lot.

But I did not like the second half - This is not the ultimate guide to what happens when we die.

Happy reading.

Great book. I love it! But if you're looking for a book full of numerous near-death experiences, this isn't what you're looking for. This has commentary on various aspects of the near-death experience. The NDEs shared are mostly summarized, but this is a great resource for those interested in near-death studies, to make sure you don't miss any aspects from just reading anecdotal accounts.

All a person ever wanted to know, and more, about near-death experiences but was afraid to ask, is contained in this well-written volume. It is written in layman's terms which makes the information easily assimilated by anyone who's been curious about the subject of death and near-death. The reader is comforted and assured that death does not mean the end of 'life' but is merely a means for us to transition from a physical form to a less dense one. We are all of us eternal beings.

Reads not as suggestive, but informative, of a lot of isolated cases. Every experience is different with a few similarities to interpret in your own way. Wonderful to get lost in. Had a ton of friends borrow this since I brought it to work. Highly recommend for any curious mind.

Of course with books like this, who can say whether it's true. Maybe someone who's had a near-death experience. Nevertheless I found it interesting because I am curious about these types of things. I would recommend this book to anyone who finds the topic interesting.
Interesting read for anyone interested in tweaking their knowledge of near death experiences.
