This book was a great introduction to the Dharma.

This book was a great introduction to the Dharma. The chapters on the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Zen Buddhism I found to be particularly interesting.

It presents essays from modern-day teachers of many Buddhist traditions, both Theravada and Mahayana, along with brief selections from ancient texts. The authors of the essays include Bhikku Bodhi, Ajahn Chah, Pema Chodron, the 14th Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Shunryu Suzuki, and Chogyam Trungpa. The book begins with a brief biography of the historical Buddha and an explanation of how Buddhism grew and developed. Part II explains the basic teachings.

If you, like me ever wondered what the teachings of the Buddha are all about, or has your understanding been confused? Then this is the book for you. To quote the book's inside flap, "The essays are written by masters who have dedicated their lives to teaching the 2,500-year-old Buddhist tradition to Westerners, a growing number of whom are learning Buddhist philosophy and such practices as meditation in order to cope with modern anxieties."
I highly recommend this excellent book!

This was a wonderful introductory book to Buddhism. It told a succinct history of Buddhism and all of its tenets and off shoots. Because Buddhism provides a completely new way of looking at the world, it took me a bit to get through, but it was definitely worth the read. I especially loved how most of the components of Buddhism were explained through excerpts from practicing Buddhists. I now have a working reading list and an idea about the authors and their writing. A must read for anyone interested in learning about and studying Buddhism.

As a beginning Buddhist I have done a great deal of reading on the subject. This book is fantastic. Each chapter is written by a different author, making it a collection of short essays. It is perfect for the lay Buddhist or anyone interested in Buddhism or just expanding his or her horizons. I have recommended this book to many friends and they have all enjoyed it.
