I feel as though my wife and I must have handed out a hundred copies of this little book by now. I originally encountered it back in the '70s and gave the first copy to my grandmother who enthusiastically recorded the first 18 years of her life before she passed away. Since I was able to visit her and my grandfather during the writing, it was a wonderful source of conversation and when, after she died, I was able to transcribe her handwritten manuscript (she wrote in pencil) and distribute it to the family... Well, that may have been even better.

If you're not familiar with the book, it's essentially a checklist. If someone takes the time to answer the relevant questions with a sentence or two, they will write their autobiography. The author even suggests where to start new paragraphs. You could also use this as a guide to interviewing; I did that with my parents and parents-in-law and had two marvelous, informative afternoons. Looking back, I think it worked better with my in-laws since I didn't know where their story would lead and so trusted them to say what needed saying.

One question: With the advent of e-books, why hasn't the author and/or publisher made this book available again? I know there's no profit in used copies. I hope they (whoever "they" are at this point) would consider the possibilities.

this book was just what I was looking for. Though it is out-of-print, it is the perfect little book to get you started on really writing your autobiography. It's simple and straight to the point. Get the book, buy the pens and paper and you are there.

We used this with my dad. It has great questions, that lead to more personal details. It was an easy way to get the ball rolling.

What a unique idea. I ordered this for my brother. I used to complete my own biography for our children. Just answering questions keeps you on track and makes it so easy.

I recommend How to Write Your Autobiography for anyone interested in preserving their family heritage. In it she poses questions to trigger your memories and your writing. They are arranged and grouped in a logical way, so you can progress through your life memories and get them onto paper. You don't write in the book, but she suggests numbering your pages as you write to keep it in sequence.

For the young adult years, she asks questions like these:

Whey you reached your young adult years, did you see changes in your family's way of life from the time when you were little?
How did those changes affect the family?
Were there modern conveniences added by your family by this time?
What trends did you see like people moving to the cities or away from the cities or other influences?

This gives you an idea of the topics. There are questions to trigger memories of favorite childhood games, chores from childhood and childhood illnesses. The question format will draw out memories that you might otherwise forget to include in your memoir.

The book includes a place for a family tree and also a section on how to bind your autobiography if you aren't getting it printed.
