It is amazing how the University of Chicago has convinced so much of the country to buy into this junk.

Every year the children have to take a two-month math time-out at the beginning of the school year to prepare to take standardized math tests measuring the knowledge they should have obtained the previous year. Two months of "review" (or old-fashioned arithmetic) for standardized testing because this teaching method is that ineffective.

While the University of Chicago generates revenue and receives free re, the children of our public schools continue to suffer by realizing increasingly lower standardized math test scores year after year through the use of this system. How long will this ineffective "project" last?

The ineffectiveness of this program is apparent, but the politics involved will not allow school districts to relieve themselves of this poor teaching method. In most districts, by the time each of the students reach middle school, they are expected to know old-fashioned arithmetic and the "project" is abandoned.

How many Kumon Centers or Sylvan Learning centers have you seen popping up in your neighborhoods lately?

All a result of the fine mess the University of Chicago has created within our public education system.

I bought this because my daughter uses the workbook which does not always explain the steps to get to the answer. I found this useful enough to give my daughter the understanding she needs to correctly answer the question. Overall, good but not great.

Exactly the same as used in school. Great price.

This program does teach the old standard algorithms and a whole lot more. Both my sons have had excellent results using this program. The program teaches mental math, multiple approaches to solving a problem and logical thinking. Of course if you are trying to use ONLY this reference guide as a basis for the program, you are doing the program and your students a disservice. This book is intended to be used by the student as a reference guide when he/she needs to look up a definition or instruction on how to solve a problem.
