Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 8 August 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, was a Dutch painter and printmaker in engraving and woodcut. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and was a very accomplished engraver. Lucas was the son of the painter Huygh Jacobsz. He was born, died, and was mainly active in Leiden.

Lucas van Leyden facts: The Dutch engraver and painter Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) was the leading graphic artist in the Netherlands in the early 16th century . Because Lucas van Leyden showed such a highly developed graphic talent in engravings dated 1508, his birth date has been thought by some to be as early as 1489. Generally, however, scholarly opinion has accepted Karel van Mander's statement (1604) that Lucas was born in Leyden (Leiden) in 1494.

As his name implies, Lucas van Leyden was born in Leiden. There is some controversy over the date of his birth. Carel van Mander in Het Schilder-Boek of 1604 says that Lucas was born in 1494 and thus his earliest dated engraving, Mohammed and the Monk Sergius, 1508, is the work of a fourteen-year-old prodigy. Opinion is divided over the question of Lucas' status as a wunderkind and several scholars believe it more likely that he was born around 1489.
