The Doctrine of Chances was the first textbook on probability theory, written by 18th-century French mathematician Abraham de Moivre and first published in 1718. De Moivre wrote in English because he resided in England at the time, having fled France to escape the persecution of Huguenots.

Very helpful, insightful interpretation of the doctrine of election.

Dr. Robert Shank is known internationally among Bible scholars for his significant books in the field of biblical theology, which are used in seminaries and colleges of many denominations. He has been preaching and teaching in the pulpit, classroom, and visiting lectureships for over fifty years and his writings have been viewed as a major doctrinal contribution to the Church. Very helpful, insightful interpretation of the doctrine of election.

In doing so, he calls into question the popular doctrine of "eternal security. Are the proof passages used to support eternal security possibly misconstrued? Dr. Shank convincingly argues that the question confronting us is not, Is the believer secure? but rather, What does it mean to be a believer?

After struggling with the implications of the Doctrines of Grace as taught by my church and reading numerous books by John Piper and other modern theologians who subscribe to Calvin's theories, I was growing more and more confused and concerned. Does God want all men to be saved? Has God arbitrarily chosen a few to be saved while passing over most of mankind leaving them without choice and without hope? One does not have to be a deep thinker to see the dark side of Calvinism. Finally, God led me to this book. THANK YOU ROBERT SHANK. I recommend this book without reservation.

A close scriptural analysis of the relationship between 'unlimited but conditional' atonement and the corporate election of believers in Christ. The author uses the natural reading of the scriptures to argue against aspects of the theological system known as 'Calvinism'. The author champions the grace of God in Christ as the means of salvation. Well worth a read.

Simply put, if you take the Scriptures at face value, you will love this book.

But, if (as Shank notes) you "are influenced by the necessities of (your) theology", and your theology is sympathetic to Calvin, you'll likely hate this book.

I have labored under the burden of particular, unconditional, election/predestination for years. Now I have been freed!

If you identify yourself as "Reformed", "Calvinist", or of that ilk, read Rom. 11:22-23,32, take those verses at face value, and then read this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who would dare to question the prevailing viewpoint of one of the cornerstones of Calvanism. Honest inquiry is needed to accept the excellent logic and exegesis of the pertinent scriptures.

I read this book and although I disagree with Shank on eternal security, his treatment of the Scriptures in answering the questions were right on. Most of the naysayers are judging Shank by their pre-conceived worldview of Calvinism rather than by exegeting the Scriptures. Even Piper has admitted that the tome of the OT reflects a corporate election view which means that the burden is upon Calvinists to prove that God changed the locus of election in the NT from corporate to individual.

What is at stake with understanding the differences between these views is the very nature of God. Is God a God of love that desires everyone to be saved, has made the way possible for all and is glorified when people respond to the invitation? Or is God so concerned with His own glory that He is willing to condemn the overwhelming majority of humanity just to prove the point that He is Sovereign?

As with these thorny questions, I use the rule of thumb that to understand what Jesus (and hence the Word) meant, look at what He did. Jesus always took a propositional approach to the idea that people were free agents with the capacity to believe in Him, whether it was by his teachings, his example, or by the evidence of the miracles.
This book explains how salvation through Jesus works and really destroys the false doctrine of predestination It needs to be read in a serious manner and not quickly and check out his statements in your own Bible and the truth will be explained well. I enjoyed reading the book and checking his references. Well written..
