Jeffrey John is, in my view, an excellent theologian providing a vitally needed presentation of those scriptures so often misused to judge gay people and condemn loving committed same-sex relationships as if they were all sinful, whatever the quality of relationship. He is also a very experienced pastor who understands the real issues surrounding the controversial subject of same-sex partnerships and provides some important pastoral guidelines. And he speaks from his heart with a good conscience - as a Christian who has been in a committed same-partnership for many years.

Permanent, Faithful, Stable. Drawing on many years’ personal and pastoral experience, Jeffrey John explores the meaning and context of the mentions of homosexuality in the Bible and also considers the moral arguments, before offering guidance to same-sex couples on forming a lasting, covenanted, monogamous relationship. For the French sprinter, see Jeffrey John (athlete). John has spoken publicly in favour of the introduction of same-sex marriage saying, "If you are gay, then please understand that God made you as you are, and loves you as you are, and if you invite him into your relationship, then of course he will bless you and sustain your love just as much as he blesses and sustains any. other marriage. In Permanent, Faithful, Stable, republished this week as Anglicans prepare for a stormy autumn of debate over same sex marriage, John outlines the theological case for gay people in stable and faithful relationships to be offered the same recognition as heterosexual couples. While superficially there is "little difference", he writes, between civil partnership and marriage, the official distinction "helps perpetuate a distinction in status".

Jeffrey John, now the Dean of St Albans, wrote a book in 1993 entitled Permanent, Faithful, Stable. It argued that homosexual relationships should be accepted and blessed by the Church, provided the quality and commitment of the relationship are the same as those expected of a Christian marriage. Yet those views remain among the most divisive issues within the Anglican Communion.

Jeffrey John argued against the model proposed in Just Good Friends in his booklet Permanent, Faithful, Stable: Christian Same-Sex Partnerships. In 2008 Stuart received the LGCM Award for 'energetic and prophetic advocacy on behalf of LGBT people, numerous pioneering theological books, and for remaining a loyal member of LGCM'. `I am writing this because I believe we have an absolute duty in the Church to offer homosexual couples not only practical support, but the same theological understanding of their relationship that we offer to heterosexual couples, to help them fulfil the same hope, the same ideal - of permanent, faithful, stable love.' Drawing on many years' personal and pastoral experience, Jeffrey John explores the meaning and context of the mentions of homosexuality in the Bible and also considers the moral arguments, before offering guidance to same-sex couples on forming a lasting, covenanted, monogamous relationship. Earlier editions of this book have become essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the theology of same-sex relationships in a Christian context. It has been cited by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, as one of the most helpful books on the subject. This new edition has been updated to take account of the latest thinking on the issue. In a brand new Preface and Postscript, Jeffrey John speaks forthrightly about the Church of England's failure to move positively in support of same-sex marriage.

This is a carefully written and well thought out book. Jeffrey John has a firmer basis for writing in this style than most and brings a creditable theological and pastoral insight into a field too often fraught with unsupported statements

I wholeheartedly recommend this excellent little book in this new edition, which is very clear, very readable and has been updated to include the question of Christian same-sex marriage In 2012, I urged the author and publisher (Darton Longman Todd) to publish a new edition of this important little book when I realized that the old edition was out out of print. I am so thankful it is now available in this new edition.
