In these beautifully written essays, Gloria Wade-Gayles is at times painfully candid as she confronts such controversial subjects as rape, homophobia, interracial relationships, and even "looking and acting too young" for her age. Yet what emerges from each piece is a powerful connection to her community, which serves as her well-spring of strength, sheltering her faith.

In this new book, Gloria Wade Gayles has brought together a winning and touching collection of pieces about teachers and teaching, with inspiring and dramatic anecdotes woven in. Rooted Against the Wind gave me, as a man, a deeper understanding of some of the struggles, challenges, obstacles that women face and overcome. From aging to rape, the author shares personal insights/learning in a way that challenges one to think beyond what we thought we knew. I was extremly moved and empowered by this book. Moved to challenge myself to think more openly and often about "women's issues" and challenged to love the women in my life in way that affirms thier womanhood and blackness.
Kabandis
