For a political pitch, and written by three different people at that, this book is well done. I would particularly recommend it for those who have not quite decided which party lever to pull on November 2nd.

The forward by Fred Barnes characterizes the authors as follows: "Cantor the leader, Ryan the thinker, and McCarthy the strategist." The labels are imperfect, e.g., aren't Ryan and McCarthy leaders too, but they seem reasonably apt.

* As Republican Whip in the House, Cantor has risen the highest in the GOP hierarchy at this point, hence the leader label. If his party retakes the House, he is probably in line to be Majority Leader.

* As author of "A Roadmap for America's Future," Ryan has shown himself a thinker for sure. Other members of the party have lauded Ryan's willingness to propose specific steps to address the nation's ruinous fiscal problem, albeit hesitating to endorse his proposals.

* McCarthy travelled all over the country in the 2006 election, while running for Congress (in Kern County, California) for the first time, to see how other Republican candidates were doing - which certainly sounds like strategic thinking.

These "young guns" acknowledge that the Republican Party made many mistakes when last in power, and must convince the public that it has learned from the experience. Political leaders should listen to what people want, not think they know better. Real solutions must be offered to real problems. The government cannot continue to spend more than people are willing to pay in taxes. And in the battle that is raging, as to whether the United States should remain dedicated to equal opportunity versus opting for equal outcomes, this trio and their allies will stand for opportunity.

If you are concerned about the rising tide of government spending, the expanding role of government in our daily lives, and the inevitability of major tax increases unless there is a course change, the ideas offered in this book should be appealing.

I trully enjoyed this book. I believe in the principals set forth in this book. Growing up in rural area of Indiana I appreciate the message the authors of this book expressed, hard work results in reward. I wish the word entitlements could be removed from the dictionary I believe that people should earn their way though life. Young guns keep up the fight.

This is a hard one. Five stars for comedy (dudes, being in your 30s and 40s is not "young"), for sure. Dumb people pretending they're smart is always funny. However, these are actually evil people, so, not that funny. Of course, Cantor has already been sent home to find a real job, instead of relying on government money. McCarthy has been sidelined, so in terms of policy, these guys have already failed in an epic way. Ryan will get his comeuppance.

I hope the opinion makers in our national mainstream media and academia give these guys an honest, serious chance, especially since our nation stands on the brink of disaster with regards to bloated federal spending and huge un-funded programs such as Social Security and Medicare ready to detonate like a nuclear bomb affecting every American's future. I highly recommend this book to everyone, young and old.

It is very encouraging to read this book and I hope these men will stick to their guns when the next Congress begins.

very well written - with people like this in our government we still have a chance to change things and become a great nation again.

... a book from the authors that is so self-critical of their own party. Sure Democrats are Democrats; nothing new there. But Cantor, Ryan and McCarthy frequently (and deservedly) place blame on both parties in Washington. In Chapter One Cantor conveys the first example: "Neither party has addressed a building crisis in America; a crisis of government spending and growth that, if continued unchecked, will-not might but will-change our country from a place where a generation does better than the last into a place where every generation piles more debt and burden on the next." McCarthy later on writes: "The first step was admitting how the party had lost its way. Under Republican leadership in the early 2000s, spending and government got out of control."

There are multiple instances throughout the book where all three authors used similar self-critical phrasing: "we lost our way" or "we lost our focus" and "we cared more about getting re-elected than the issues." This auto-critique is both welcome and healthy to the important discussion concerning the problems in Washington. We the people have had enough of the malfeasance and corrupt behavior in DC and it's refreshing to hear these three young men owning up (if at the least acknowledgment)to the misconduct of the political elite-a-crats in Washington.

As you read through 'Young Guns' you will see that Cantor, Ryan and McCarthy make several statements like: "To earn back the voters' trust we would have to do more than just oppose the policies of the Democratic majority. We had to offer creative and effective solutions of our own." With one example being Ryan's "Roadmap For America" they have done just that.

It is refreshing that the party in shambles a couple of short years ago has appeared to (at least attempted) to own up to it's bad behavior and shear stupidity that helped get them into the minority. Afterall, wisdom comes from experience. Experience comes from mistakes. And mistakes come from bad judgement. These three young Republican leaders display to this reader that they have learned from their experience. Their humble expressions and reflections in this book prove that they have learned some great lessons these past few tumultuous years. It is in my opinion these 'Young Guns' be given a chance. If their actions prove to be fraudulent like those of Obama, Pelosi and Reid, then we the people will again rise up and take action. However, I don't think this 'action' will be called for. That is... if these three young men demonsrate that they are men of good sense like that which is expressed in this book. It is my conclusion that they certainly have the capacity to do just that. Read the book.
