I had this book when I went to film school. It was required for an acting class, and I was not good at the time. Fast-forward a decade and I decided to buy it again. Now, with more experience knowing what acting is and what makes good acting, I can finally judge this book appropriately.

This is a book of scenes from all sorts of movies, from comedies to dramas. It is a collection of scenes sorted by male and female roles (but that doesn't mean you have to stick to that) ranging from monologues to multi-character scenes.

I highly suggest trying to work through any scenes before watching the film it's taken from. See if you can deliver lines in your own way, instead of trying to imitate what was already done.

Recommended.

Some scenes are great, some aren't. I wouldn't call any of them fantastic, but the whole point of acting is to read the emotional behaviour of the other person. If they find what you're saying pretentious, you'll know it. So, if your lines are terrible, they're going to give a reaction, and it may be one where they're laughing at you. Nonetheless, you're getting that reaction, and that's what it's all about. Some scenes in here will give you that pretentious reaction, where others are well thought out. For the price, and the fact that there's 99...GREAT BUY!

I got this for film study class. As a 59 year old man, I found too many of the scenes not appropriate for my age range (though I did find a few that worked at any age). Also, some of the scenes simply were too choppy to be fully realized scenes. And many of the scenes are from the same movie. As thick as this book is, I really expected more scenes that were usable.

If you are into acting, want to make movies, write them or just watch them, this book is a lot of fun to flip through. Most of the scenes aren't from big "playing everywhere" movies so you don't have to worry about imitating someone else's performance. And with the few that are,it's a good exercise in how to make a charactor"yours" instead of DeNiro's (for example.) A worthwhile scene-book to own.

I am in a college acting class, and I have to say that even I think that a lot of these scenes are about pretty adult subjects, for example the hockey/parking garage fight from "Chasing Amy," or all of the scenes from "Sex, Lies, and Videotape." (There are 4) I am also disappointed that almost all of the boy/girl scenes in this book involve the theme of sex or need the two actors to have some sort of romantic relationship or past. It's boring to do scenes involving romance like that for every scene in a class.

Very handy for doing acting exercises anywhere on the planet.
Not a bad collection of excerpts from the silver screen, but rather limited to choices of movies produced up to the year 1999.
