Care for your piano Even digital pianos can last several years if properly cared for, and acoustic.

Co-authored by Michael Noble, PhD. Updated: June 26, 2019. There's no point in spending money on something you're not going to maintain! Even digital pianos can last several years if properly cared for, and acoustic pianos should last much longer. With enough maintenance, you can make the most out of your purchase and see that your piano lives a long, happy life.

How to Safely Move Your Piano

How to Safely Move Your Piano. For cross-town relocations, a professional piano mover is usually your best bet for a grand piano. In long-distance relocations, it’s best to have a professional who deals exclusively with pianos to disassemble your piano and pack it carefully before involving furniture movers. Before your piano comes out of storage, think about where you will want to practice and play music. Look at the windows, walls, doors, and floor.

Buy it used. Lots of good, essential, common sense, and largely unknown information in here! Read this book! Buying a used piano? As soon as you hear "This piano hardly ever needs tuning" cut your offer by 2/3rds. Maybe more. Piano owners should at least skim this book and start getting your pianos tuned. A piano that isn't tuned regularly is simply furniture. It has little value as an instrument! Think "twice a year". Save all your tuning receipts so you can prove it was tuned regularly, for that day when you sell it and trade up! This book will save you money.

Piano owners and buyers are well-advised to read up on their subject. There's far too much of quick process of buying a new car, and nowhere near enough considering some very tricky artistic/aesthetic issues. This book is a good complement to Larry Fine's "The Piano Book" which discusses pianos by brand. Here, the mechanics of a piano are discussed, including the ones that are likely to give you trouble, such as tuning. Both books will help you wade through the salesman's babble -- which is about as important as having whitewall tires on your car, for those of you who remember that scam. You do not have to pick through the intricate two diagrams of piano action, but they're certainly nice to have when you're looking inside, and wondering "what does that do"? It's only 120 pages, and you'll know a lot more about your piano when you're finished. With this book you'll feel more confident and knowledgeable for very little effort.
