Pantheon Books, 1990 - Rock music - 514 pages. Christgau's another opinionated writer, and here's his unique take on the 1980s. From inside the book. Very opinionated, very palate-oriented, very political and surprisingly unpredictable. How useful this is as a guide to recordings I haven't heard still to be seen.

Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies. Christgau's Consumer Guide: Albums of the 90s is his third record guide. Finally, I would take Christgau's own advice when deciding whether or not to purchase this book: Find a copy at a library or book store, and turn to the year-end best-of lists in the back. If at least a few of his higher ranked cds are also among your faves, then purchase immediately.

Christgau's Record Guide: The '80s is a music reference book authored by American music journalist Robert Christgau and published in October 1990 by Pantheon Books. The entries covering a decade's work by a performer sometimes read like tiny novels, full of suspense, dramatic turnarounds, tragedy or farce. But what makes the book work is Christgau's endless capacity for surprise.

This collection by Christgau is revisionist history. The book is not a collection of the original reviews, but his edited reviews with new scoring. I wanted the original unedited reviews, but those do not exist in book form, so this is as close as you are going to get.

I bought this book when it first came out in 1981 and after all these years it is still never out of arms reach on my bookshelf.
Christgau reviews and grades about 3,000 albums from the 70's in his unique and outspoken manner. While you may not agree personally with some of his reviews it is an entertaining and informative read. Many of the albums I have grown to love over the years I first found out about from this book. A great resource for anyone interested in the wide variety of rock albums from the 70's!
