This is a landmark book on a tricky subject - how can performers increase their abilities at musical interpretation and, specifically, create more dynamic and expressive performances? (Additionally: what characteristics of musical expression are common to all musicians: singers, pianists, and instrumentalists?) Barra tackles this with great specificity using approaches which, according to Menhuin, provide connections between a musician's intuition and his or her reason. The book is full of specific musical examples, organized into chapters such as Phrasing, Rhythm and Meter, and Rubato.

His text, entitled The Dynamic Performance; a Performer's Guide to Musical Expression and Interpretation (Prentice Hall, 1983) has become a standard in the field. Barra's doctoral studies at Columbia University (and his dissertation, entitled Listening and the Aesthetic Experience) are the basis for his book, and for his extraordinary understanding of the nature of musical interpretation. I am delighted with The Dynamic Performance by Donald Barra. If it did not carry Donald Barra's signature, I would be tempted to call it my own, so closely do our thoughts coincide.

This is a landmark book on a tricky subject -- how can performers increase their abilities at musical interpretation and, specifically, create more dynamic and expressive performances? (Additionally: what characteristics of musical expression are common to all musicians: singers, pianists, and instrumentalists?)

Barra tackles this with great specificity using approaches which, according to Menhuin, provide connections between a musician's intuition and his or her reason. The book is full of specific musical examples, organized into chapters such as Phrasing, Rhythm and Meter, and Rubato.

"Patterns of Evolution" is the chapter in which Barra engages with music theory, discussing things such as the shape of melodies, the reoccurrence of motifs, and harmonic development -- all with the goal of arming the musician with information to be used in performance.

As might be expected, the musical examples that Barra calls upon, come out of the Western classical tradition, beginning the the Baroque and ending with early 20th century composers; numerous examples are taken from Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn with a healthy sampling of Romantic composers.

I think this would be a great supplemental resource for conducting class or music education students. Anyone making music at the college level could benefit from the contents. It's an easy read on a subject that doesn't really seem to be presented on it's own, but within another context. Ready to discover your rubato super powers? Read this. :)
