Much of its culture and even history was either obliterated or assimilated into that of its conqueror, Rome Etruscan Civilization: A Cultural History.

Etruscan Civilization: A Cultural History (2000). This comprehensive survey of Etruscan civilization, from its origin in the Villanovan Iron Age in the ninth century . to its absorption by Rome in the first century . combines well-known aspects of the Etruscan world with new discoveries and fresh insights into the role of women in Etruscan society. In addition, the Etruscans are contrasted to the Greeks, whom they often emulated, and to the Romans, who at once admired and disdained them. The result is a compelling and complete picture of a people and a culture.

This comprehensive and fully up-to-date survey of Etruscan civilization traces its development from origins in the Villanovan Iron Age in the ninth century BC to its absorption by Rome in the first century. To the quite justified praises of this splendid volume I should like to add my own praise of its format. Published by the J. Paul Getty Museum in quarto size, the text is lavishly illustrated with clearly focused photographs of locations, tombs, and objects, many in color, some in full-page, plus well drawn color maps. Sybil Haynes' text is a brilliant guide to these images. This is a fine example of book art and a visual feast. Pity it's not available in hardback.

As an author and scholar, I read the book with great care. It is my opinion that this book is the "gold standard" on Etruscan archeology and far and away way the best illustrated work on Etruscan society.

This is a splendid review of nine centuries of Etruscan cultural, economic, social and artistic history. Designed for the educated nonspecialist, it has beautiful photos in both black/white and color of art works held in museums throughout the world: the most wide-ranging collection I have ever seen in one volume. The author, an expert in her field, writes clearly and well about the latest archaelogical evidence (up to the book's publication in 2000), and its relevance to our understanding of Etruscan life. Well recommended to anyone with an interest in this field.

This is a very comprehensive well written book with a bend toward Etruscan Women and their role in that society. Lots of good Illustrations and Pictures. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about Etruscan civilization, the part women played and Etruscan impact on the Roman world.

Couldn't put it down! An intelligent, beautifully illustrated and fascinating study of a culture I became fascinated with after visiting the Etruscan Museum in Rome. I learned so much about this lost - and amazing - civilization, especially how the people lived and died.

lots of detail much of which feels repetitive..the book is huge!!!
Felt the author was a little too focused on the fact that in Etruscan society women had a remarkably equal role....the pictures are the most helpful part of the book which i read before going to Italy and visiting the places she talks about.
Excellent! A wonderful companion to Livy's works.
