London-born art critic and curator, Michael Wilson has written an excellent and clear-cut guide on contemporary . I tend to read books instead, though this book reminds me of how much I like art, even in reproductions, even when I am no longer a visual or plastic artist.

Today’s artists create work that’s challenging, complicated, and often perplexing, and this book offers a guide to understanding—and enjoying—the wide range of works on display in museums and galleries worldwide. How to Read Contemporary Art provides a thoughtful, accessible, and lavishly illustrated look at the ever-changing world of art at the beginning of the 21st century. Organized alphabetically, the book encompasses photography, installation, sculpture, painting, video art, performance, and more. Author Michael Wilson explores the impact of a broad selection of the most prominent artists at work around the world today, including Francis Alÿs, Allora & Calzadilla, Luc Tuymans, and Marina Abramović.

This is not a "How To" book as the term is commonly understood. It is not a collection of principles or strategies for 'reading" art. Instead, its a collection of art critics that read more like art history study sheets that are organized organized under art history subject headings. It is a selection of works by the author from a vast field. But the title suggests that one can come away with an understanding of contemporary art (a tough assignment for even trained pros). In reality, only a really motivated person can cull the elements of an approach from this selection of works, but a truer title "Approaches to Contemporary Art" may be more appropriate. Mary Actons books are probably better as an approach.

Having said this, this title in the series is stronger than others because the boundaries of modern art is in constant flux. Wilson uses alternative ways of viewing and approaching new work, which suggests that a lot of the difficulty encountered vis-a-vis modern art can dissipate if we approach the work the way we face our contemporary every day experience. This is after all, what contemporary artists confront and relate to in generating their art. A really excellent approach to this is Ossian Ward's book, Ways of Looking. Ossian pays respect to Wilson's book and helped change m mind about his book. I considered returning it, but decided to keep it.

This is a book full of interesting images and descriptions of many artists' works. but it lacks a conceptual summary It did not explain the WHY of contemporary art, and maybe it is just too soon to do that.

Don't judge a book by its title? Oh, on the contrary: since we're not talking about fiction, your very first idea about a book is its title.
What should one expect the book to be about when it states it's a book about "How to Read [..] Art"? You'd expect commentary, critique, philosophical musings, in-depth dissections of the ideas - even subjective opinions would do... But no, you'll have none of that! Instead, here's a wikipedia of about two hundred artists: a page of text summarising who each artist is and what's (s)he done and some pictures of a few of her artworks; done - next!

If you bought a book labeled "How to fly an airplane" and inside you'd find beautiful pictures of planes and a few paragraphs about each one's design and history would you consider yourself to be a step closer to becoming a pilot?

Perhaps the selection of the included artists is a good one - time will tell, perhaps the descriptions are concise and pertinent, but when you set the expectations in the title and on the cover into one direction ("[..] this book offers a guide to understanding - and enjoying - the wide range of works on display...") and then instead collect some introductory leaflets and bind them together... my reaction is: 2 stars.

I have to give this book more time because it includes a lot of text. Comments by artists are always interesting, however, some don't communicate well. Images are a little small. Would be better with fewer and larger images.

A lot of unknown artist for me. Interesting the number of female artist (yeah!!) and how many are using video and other new ways to express their artistic vision in this century.
This is a great book, it arrived in time and in perfect condition. I'm very happy with my purchase and would buy again.
It's a great reference book for artists or those interested in the contemporary art scene. Great coffee table book too but I keep mine in the studio, for inspiration.
