Cashoutmaster
This book includes many large color full-page prints of the Annenberg Collection paintings. If you are looking for a succinct "museum wall" type description of the paintings, it is lost in the ample text. The Annenberg Collection is only a fraction of the entire Met collection of impressionism and post-impressionism. A complementary book to this one is "Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1991". The 1991 book lacks the Annenberg Collection because it predates the donation.
Either book will give you an excellent preview or keepsake of your visit to the gallery but I prefer the 1991 book for these purposes.
Renthadral
The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses the most comprehensive collection of nineteenth century French paintings outside of Paris. One of the museum's most important recent additions is the group of 55 Impressionist, Post Impressionist, and early twentieth century paintings, pastels, and watercolors from the collection of Walter Annenberg, an ambassador to Britain and his wife Leonore. Although the couple lived in California, they were major trustees of the museum and bequeathed the works after Walter's death. This book is the catalogue of all their acquisitions by eighteen leading artists. Even though a couple of pieces were reproduced in "Masterpieces of European Painting 1800-1920 from the Metropolitan Museum of Art'(see my review), I wanted pictures of all the wonderful works of art. Each piece is photographed in mostly full page color plates with in depth discussions and comparative photos. Commentaries range from two to nearly ten pages. Key works illustrated include Claude Monet's "Camille Monet on A Garden Bench", Auguste Renoir's "The Daughters of Catulle Mendes", Edgar Degas' "At the Milliners", Paul Gauguin's "The Siesta", Vincent van Gogh's "La Berceuse", Berthe Morisot's "The Pink Dress", Paul Cezanne's "Seated Peasant" , Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's "The Streetwalker", Edouard Vuillard's "The Album", Henri Matisse's "Odalisque in Gray Trousers", Georges Braque's "The Studio", and Pablo Picasso's "At the Lapin Agile". Other highlights are a trio of Henri Fantin-Latour's still lifes, Eugene Boudin's beach scenes, Pierre Bonnard's radiant "Garden" as well as works by Camille Corot, Edouard Manet, and Georges Seurat . I found the commentaries very informative and the reproductions were beautifully photographed. I recommend buying this and the other fore mentioned book so you have a complete overview of the Metropolitan's nineteenth and early twentieth European painting collection.
