You Are the Message book. Roger Ailes, Jon Kraushar. You are the message  . Roger Ailes wrote "You are the Message: Getting what you want by being who you are'' in 1988: before the Internet, before Social Media and before Fox, Fox News (which he created) and the iPodization of America changed everything about mass communications. And yet, most of Ailes' advice is just as relevant today, classic and timeless today as it was in 1988: the strategies are very similar while the platforms and tools have exploded and multiplied.

I was listening to an interview on Bloomberg Radio, and heard about You Are The Message. Couldn't put it down. At 67, and having been National Sales Manager for OPEX Corporation, an international manufacturing company, I learned things that I'm implementing into my current business life, and wish I'd known 30 years ago. Fantastic!

First came across this book 30 years ago. This is the most clear and concise guide to promoting anything from products to politicians. I used this book for years as a corporate public relations manager with excellent results. It is an outstanding guide for executive media training. Forget about Roger Ailes as head of Fox News and all that. He was first and foremost a brilliant political strategist. It is well worth studying.

I learned more than being a great speaker in Mr. Aisles book. I learned how to listen and comprehend a speaker's and interviewer's agenda from the audience's perspective. The book also makes you want to hire him and his team to help guide you through giving speeches and interviews. Awesome book all around!

Definitely a great start for anyone looking to increase their knowledge in public speaking.

Ailes methodology is decently structured and easily followed (there is an outline at the end of the book for quick reference and refreshers). Using real world experiences to exemplify his methods, Ailes often refers to inspiring speakers from his days in television and his work as a consultant. All of the instances are relevant and useful, but not always completely awe-inspiring. Some of the examples are a bit dated for a 2010 read, but definitely take note of the "four essentials of a good communicator", the "first seven seconds", and advice on using video to further your education as a speaker.

From what I have taken from this book, it has become my framework for public speaking, presentation, and (in a small but noticeable way) sales.

The key point of the book is that effective communication depends not only on what you say, but how you say it. Although marketing, politics, and journalism have changed in decades, these lessons are timeless.

Ailes present exercises for speaking and presentation skills. The tips and techniques are invaluable. What works in front of the camera also works in person. Non-verbal cues are so important in interpersonal communication. Most important, how we present ourselves to others speaks volumes about who we are - what we believe, value, understand, as well as our character.
This book is the sine non qua for anyone interested in leadership, business, marketing, politics or communicating with others!

Great book on effectively putting yourself out there in business and social settings. Not a "how to"
book, but rather guidelines to make the most of what's already within you. An easy and fun read.
Good read with solid actionable advice. I recommend reading the book backwards for quick gouge on how to handle the media and preparing for your next speaking gig.
