Randy L. Bott (born 1945) was an American professor of religion at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, United States. A great book for missionaries. Brother Bott tells it like it is, and does it with humor and encouragement. He is a very popular professor at BYU, so take a class from him if you go there!

Anyone who never got to take a class from Bro. Bott should read this book!

He recommends one of his books for his Mission Prep class at BYU, they have a lot of insight on what missionaries go through.

Randy Bott has been a stake mission president, a bishop, a counselor in a stake presidency, etc.; he teaches missionary preparation classes at Brigham Young University. He has also written the books Prepare With Honor: A Guide for Future Missionaries,Home With Honor: Helps for Returning Missionaries,Send Forth With Honor, and Preparation Precedes Power, How Successful Missionaries Prepare to Serve.

He writes in the Introduction to this 1995 book, "This book is the result of nearly a life-time of involvement in missionary-related activities... I have taken a rather broad approach. My hope is to offer practical, down-to-earth advice on matters essential to serving a successful mission... This book will not attempt to reiterate what is contained in officially printed Church materials. Topics like how to find investigators, friendship, teach, baptize, and fellowship are masterfully covered in the Missionary Guide: Training For Missionaries... My intent in writing is to help make your transition into missionary life as painless as possible by identifying potential challenges."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"When you arrive in your mission area ... No matter what the term is in your mission (according to the language you speak), the meaning is the same: You are a 'greeny'!" (Pg. 8)
"If you are going to make mistakes in technique, make them in your first area, because after you leave your first area, people will assume you are a seasoned missionary." (Pg. 10)
"You will discover a need to grow into the principle of discussing the gospel nearly all the time---as often as is appropriate and helpful." (Pg. 52)
"The true missionaries of Christ were determined enough and strong enough to reach their goal of 100 percent obedience... The others started making excuses why they couldn't keep all of the mission rules. 'Nobody else is totally obedient' was one of the most frequently used rebuttals... I would remind these missionaries that the Lord never said, 'I the Lord am bound if ye do 80 percent of what I say'!" (Pg. 116)
"One big mistake that missionaries make is trying to teach beyond the basics." (Pg. 132)
"Using contradictory evidence from the Bible shows that the person's argument may be faulty or illogical. The person may attempt to dismiss the contradictions in the Bible, but at the same time he is forced to admit that the same rationale could be used with so-called inconsistencies in modern-day scripture." (Pg. 140)
