I have been following Scott Kirsner's blog, Cinema-Tech for quite some time. [...] He is an authority on new media. I find his writing to be informative, but accessible. I was excited when his current book, Fans, Friends, and Followers was released. [I was even more anxious to obtain the book after reading a 35 page preview that Kirsner has posted on his website for free. In PDF format.] The book is an excellent read. A definitive resource for any creative person. This is less of a "how to" book and more of a "how other people did it" book with the bulk of the content focusing on interviews. Only the first 34 pages ("Understanding the New Rules) and the sections entitled "Exploring new Business Models" and "Power Tools" ( 8 pages and 14 pages respectively near the end) look at the broad application of building an audience in the digital age and how it can feasibly be done.

Some of the information is solid such as being mindful of choosing the platform that you're going to use (this seems like common sense but it's amazing to me how many creative feel like they need to be on every social media site, even the ones that don't cater to their demographic), and paying attention to shifts in behavior so that you can take advantage of them.

Be mindful that some of the tips are (as expected with anything involving technology) out of date. For example crowdfunding is now commonplace as opposed to being a groundbreaking new business model. Additionally, it's clear that the author did not do his due diligence in vetting some the sites that are listed in the "Power Tools" section since he includes sites like iUniverse (http://accrispin.blogspot.com/2006/06/ac-crispin-57-iuniverses-publishing.html Note that this was published three years BEFORE the book) which means that as a reader you can't trust his recommendations in this regard and for me personally that's an issue as it calls into credibility the rest of the work.

If you feel like you absolutely must have this book then I suggest purchasing a used copy.

In the first 35 pages Kirsner gives to the reader an overview of the "New Rules" of the distribution in a very schematic way. He also defines the terms like "audience" or "platform".

Then from page 36 the book is basically a collection of interviews with artists, Filmmakers, Writers, Musicians and Creative Types in general, who succeeded in their field using internet distribution or internet-based marketing strategies.

This is not a guide to learn HOW to build your blog or website, but rather a very inspirational book about WHY you want to use the new medias to promote, distribute, and share your creativity with the world.

Just finished reading this and because of all my notes, the paperback looks more like a battered journal than a book. (that's mostly a good thing: the cover is peeling off and the book is curling but I've still got all the info inside). I've probably charted myself at least 3-4 months of work off of this. I can't wait to get started on a bunch of ideas, some straight out of the pages and others that popped into mind as I read. It doesn't matter that many of these artists aren't writers like I am; the ideas are easily transferable to whatever medium/s you work in. If you'd like to develop an online audience and make a little bit of money too, you can't go wrong with this.

I've been reading a slew of books on building up a following for business using social networking tools. Being an artist ( kinetic sculpture and animation) it was great to come across a book directed at artists and performers. I love that the interviews address the issue of using multiple income streams to fund one's work. The book presents a nice mix of internet and off-line examples for building an audience of fans. I'll be referring back to this often when I need an inspirational shot in the arm!
I am a guy interested in many art forms: painting, guitar, and writing. I have experience in selling paintings to friends and family, but I've never made anything of my skills outside of that personal stuff. I greatly desire to expand and reach people I don't know, and this book offers great ideas to do that. It is also simply an inspirational book for artists as one can see how so many greatly successful, current artists made their start. Any artist can relate to this book because it covers artists working in both the visual and performing arts. If you're an artist, and you read this book and it does NOT get your mind racing, CHECK YOUR PULSE! :)
