Within the United States, this book brings together various ideas for social justice that are likely to be encountered by counseling practitioners. There is a broad scope of topics, that in its own way, reflects the diversity of the nation and of its problems.

So what are some of these problems? One addresses wellness in schools. Mostly perhaps about the physical well being of students. Then there is outreach to what are termed underserved populations. Mostly urban youths. They might have trouble accessing traditional mental health services. In part, possibly due to limited English skills.

Another topic is college women who have disablities. They often have trouble getting married. While this is not a preferred option for some women, for many others it is, especially as a social marker of status. So counseling is often needed at the college level for disabled women.

Homeless mothers are another topic. Here, the difficulty of finding safe shelter and of finding and holding down a job are compounded by trying to retain custody of a child. Especially when well meaning government agencies might try to take the child away. A very difficult and challenging situation for a counselor.

I use this book in my social justice class, and I wish it was more... engaging. The students think that it is very plain and dry to read. I was hoping for something that would excite the students in the class. It is a useful book, and facilitates class discussions, but I actually use other books along side this one.
