In 1923, Birkhoff also proved that the Schwarzschild geometry is the unique spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein field equations. A consequence is that black holes are not merely a mathematical curiosity, but could result from any spherical star having sufficient mass. Birkhoff's most durable result has been his 1931 discovery of what is now called the ergodic theorem.

A highly recommended high-school text by two eminent scholars

Birkhoff has attempted to create a basic geometry textbook which will do for the modern English reader what Euclid did for thousands of brilliant scholars throughout history: transmit an intricate and towering edifice of thought, built piece by piece from only clear and unassailable logic, through the demonstration of that construction...

...and, thereby, not only show -- through insight --
the beauty of the whole, but also impart the understanding *and habit* of logical thought.

This experience -- of finding clarity and sense and firm footing in a mist of the trivial and abstract -- has been written of in glowing terms by what seems to be nearly every great mathematician who wrote at all! I've wanted to follow in those footsteps, but Euclid in the original is... well... not optimized for the instruction of the novice, we might say.

Birkhoff's book, though, is -- or else certainly makes an effort at it. It starts with four axioms, and all else is built from that in a clear, logical progression -- just as you'd hope.

These are not the normal axioms and progressions you'd find in a basic geometry textbook, but rather an alternative set devised by Birkhoff. They are just as valid, and Birkhoff makes a convincing case that this way results in more intuitive instruction -- less to memorize, fewer edge cases -- and that there is no difficulty in switching to classes or texts based on the more common axioms; but this might still be a relevant concern for certain users.

My only reason for subtracting a star is that there is a bit too much of the "fluffy example" -- e.g. a long story about an imaginary baseball game just to introduce a simple concept -- and that the book does not include answers for any problems (I believe).

That said, there is an Instructor's Edition available. Ultimately, this was my favorite of all the geometry texts I tried, and it remains my first recommendation.

I'm currently working through it, and am finding it really good. The approach is to present geometry as an ideal axiomatic system and show how all statements flow logically from others. Although all books on geometry are supposed to do this, it's not always presented as clearly as it should be.

I feel I'm getting what I need from this book. The other book I tried was the Jurgenson text, which is a standard high school textbook, but I found it to be somewhat childish and unfocused. This book is written in a more mature and serious style, and gets right down to it. Although I'm not that far into it yet, so far it seems very good for someone interested in introducing themselves to the logically systematic groundwork of mathematics, geometry, or, as in my case, both.
