Ecological Climatology. Bonan, Gordon B. 2016. Forests, Climate, and Public Policy: A 500-Year Interdisciplinary Odyssey.

It examines the physical, chemical, and biological processes by which landscapes affect and are affected by climate. The coupling between climate and vegetation is seen at spatial scales from stomata to vegetation geography and at time scales of near instantaneous to millennia. Ecological climatology is an interdisciplinary framework to understand the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems in the climate system. It examines the physical, chemical, and biological processes by which landscapes affect and are affected by climate. The central theme is that terrestrial ecosystems, through their cycling of energy, water, chemical elements, and trace gases, are important determinants of climate. The coupling between climate and vegetation is seen at spatial scales from stomata to vegetation geography and at time scales of near instantaneous to millennia. In particular, natural vegetation dynamics and human land uses and land management are important mechanisms of climate change. The boreal forest-tundra ecotone and the North African Sahel are examples of climate-ecosystem dynamics at the biogeographical spatial and temporal scale. Deforestation, desertification of drylands, cultivation of grasslands, reforestation following farm abandonment, and urbanization are case studies of how human uses of land alter climate.

What could be a very excellent resource is almost unusable due to the small font chosen by the publisher.

Do you really want to ruin your eyes to learn fairly technical information? Many students will have no choice.

Could we call font size an ethical, moral choice when students must study the material in order to understand it? If so, this is an immoral and unethical textbook.

I work at a college where a professor told me they would like to order this book. I did. They have not complained! The outside looks nice, I am sure the content is educational and informative as well.

This book first off is very poorly made. I've had it for about a month and treated it well and it's already falling apart. Pages just fall out. Definitions are not provided in the back of the book and do not do a good job explaining definitions of terms or equations within the chapters either. Doesn't provide good conceptual examples of how to apply the equations other than the direct examples which are not very helpful. Also even though it claims to be prime, took weeks to arrive. recommend not buying this book. I'm a 4th year college student who is getting a minor in climate change studies and this is by far the worst text I've had to use for any of the classes.

This book is excellent
The various chapters go through the mechanism s of the carbon cycle and explain the vital role plants play in storing carbon and how it cycles through the atmosphere
The only problem was some knowledge of calculus is required for some of the chapters
Overall great!

Combining two usually-separate fields of study is no easy task. Bonan however, takes on this arduous task and accomplishes it admirably. In thoroughly researched and well laid-out chapters, he explains the often overlooked link between climate and ecology in a straight-forward and easy-to-understand way.

Included in the book are many recent (global) climate models and how they (might) affect the world's ecology. Alongside these models, he also reviews and explains--in good detail, but easy-to-read format--every ecosystem, from soils to urban centers and leaf area index to agricultural systems.

The affects climate has on ecology, and vice-versa, is often overlooked (or down-played) in mainstream science, and (graduate) students of either (or a related) discipline would be well-advised to include this book in their library. It uses examples from not only North America (where the author resides), but from all parts of the world, further extending its applicability and value.
