I use this book often when I want to look up information or understand certain aspects of our American history. With all the talk about what our founding fathers meant when they placed this or that into the framework of the constitution, this book is helpful.

This survey aims to balance social and cultural with the political and diplomatic history. It aims to help instructor to organize his or her course in many different ways confident that the text will support both the topics discussed in class and provide students with the ideal book for self-study. Every chapter begins with a summary of major themes and ends with a boxed chronology entitled "Significant Events", noting the major events discussed in the chapter. "Where Historians Disagree" essays describe major histographical debates. Greater attention is given to native American history, and there are revised sections on women's history.

This text is used across the US as one of the standard texts for AP US History. As a tutor for students taking this course,
I obtained the book in order to help the students. It is well written and the author makes every attempt to make the material
accessible for high school students as well as college students. US History is full of detail, of course, and an understanding
of the details in context is a major goal for the student. This text does a good job of noting the diverse historical experiences
of the populations who were native to the US and those who arrived at different times. It also deals with geography, technology,
wars and territorial expansion, and important historical figures. The online materials available for the book are excellent.

This history book was exactly what I was looking for. It is meant for seniors in high school or freshmen in college. It's an excellent book to have on your shelf! I use this book often when I want to look up information or understand certain aspects of our American history. With all the talk about what our founding fathers meant when they placed this or that into the framework of the constitution, this book is helpful.

The table of contents is very neat and laid out! The book is easy to see and read. The font is not too small and this book contains alot of information for the class. Goes well in depth and has subtitles that really help the student understand what they are reading.

I am teaching U.S. history to high school sophomores, and I bought this textbook to supplement the history textbook the students use. This textbook has great pictures (many primary documents such as political cartoons or images of paintings), detailed information about historical topics, and is well-written. I found it very helpful for acquiring more detail about specific topics, such as the Hamilton-Burr duel, the XYZ Affair, things like that. I would recommend this book to advanced high school students, college students, and history lovers. I have enjoyed reading it immensely.

This book is pretty comprehensive and serves as the standard text in a large number of colleges. It covers the material taught in both Hisorty 1 and 2. A bit on the expensive side but this book works for both classes therefore you can view it as actually being half price.

It is pretty easy to read and uses some non-standard words throughout. I regard this as a plus since I like to expand my vocabulary. Once you get into the later chapters you will notice that it only loosely stays to its chronological organization. You will "catch up" to some of the things that you read about a few chapter back. Overall it is a good book. It better be for that price anyways...
