The guiding principle of this reporting is one we have developed-city by city, story by story, question by question, surprise by surprise-through our years of travel. During the late fifteenth century, Madeira was at the height of its prosperity as the world's largest producer of sugar. This condition changed, however, when the Madeira model for sugar production was introduced to Brazil. By 1620 the sugar industry on the island was in decline as the competition from Brazil proved overpowering.
