Biochemical aspects of chemical carcinogenesis. This article briefly outlines three major biochemical problems in relation to the presence of chemical carcinogens in mammalian cells: (a) the enzymatic systems responsible for the chemical carcinogen metabolism; (b) the nature of the reactive metabolites and (c) the cellular target(s). References and examples are only given for the field of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
