Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His hearing began to deteriorate in his late twenties, yet he continued to compose, conduct, and perform, even after becoming completely deaf.

The Ludwig van Beethoven biography. It looks as though Beethoven had misled Haydn in respect of his total income, and thus exposed Haydn to the elector’s withering reply. Beethoven’s salary as organist was thus fixed at 150 florins. He may also have misled Haydn as to the dates of the works the latter submitted to the elector, although it is hard to know whether Haydn actually thought that they were new works or knowingly submitted them as newly revised works.

As the new century progressed, Beethoven composed piece after piece that marked him as a masterful composer reaching his musical maturity. His Six String Quartets, published in 1801, demonstrate complete mastery of that most difficult and cherished of Viennese forms developed by Mozart and Haydn. Beethoven also composed The Creatures of Prometheus in 1801, a wildly popular ballet that received 27 performances at the Imperial Court Theater.

The New Grove Beethoven is a printed version of the article, by well-respected musicologists Joseph Kerman and Alan Tyson, of the article that was in the 1980 edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the standard English-language reference work for classical music. Much as been written about Beethoven (and a few new sources discovered) in the 32 years since its issuance, but it is nevertheless still valuable. Unlike the two standard 500-page biographies by Maynard Solomon (1998) and Lewis Lockwood (2003), it sticks to the objective facts and keeps speculation to a minimum, so it a much shorter and easier read when that's all you need. I compared it to the current Grove Music Online article on Beethoven and found that much of the text is still current, although the important new discoveries have been added to the online version by Scott Burnham.
