In 1906 and 1907, William James delivered a series of eight lectures at the Lowell Institute, Boston, and at Columbia University, New York City which he published as "Pragmatism: A New Way for Some Old Ways of Thinking". This short book, which James further described as "popular" lectures on philosophy constituted James's fullest statement of his thought up to that time. It remains a provocative, valuable, and important work, a classic of American thought. I want to mention some James's Pragmatism.

The lectures that follow were delivered at the Lowell Institute in Boston in November and December, 1906, and in January, 1907, at Columbia University, in New York. They are printed as delivered, without developments or notes.

Pragmatism is a short series of lectures given by William James that encapsulates the philosophy of the same name. Philosophy is enormously important but also horribly communicated by its main proponents, which is a major reason why it has the reputation of being esoteric and unrelated to reality. When reading philosophy, it is important to look at the core ideas. there are some parts that are talking about what was happening at the time of it's writing (1920s) that don't really mean anything today, but great none the less.

William James, oldest of five children (including Henry James and Alice James) in the extraordinary James family, was born in New York City on January 11, 1842. He has had a far-reaching influence on writers and thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This philosophy seems to reinforce the tenets of social Darwinism and the idea of financial success as the justification of the means in a materialistic society; nevertheless, James strove to demonstrate the practical value of ethical behavior.

William James Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking. To avoid one misunderstanding at least, let me say that there is no logical connexion between pragmatism, as I understand it, and a doctrine which I have recently set forth as 'radical empiricism. We think that for a landlady considering a lodger, it is important to know his income, but still more important to know his philosophy. We think that for a general about to fight an enemy, it is important to know the enemy's numbers, but still more important to know the enemy's philosophy.

James propounded his theories of pragmatism in this book, one of the most important in American philosophy. In a sense, he wished to test competing systems of thought in the "marketplace of actual experience" to determine their validity, . whether adopting a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct or in how we perceive and react to the varieties of experience.

The word pragmatism is used everywhere today, from business to sports to politics. For James, pragmatism was a specific philosophical alternative to essentialism and foundationalism and argued that ideas are meaningful only insofar as they have practical consequences in concrete human experience; however today pragmatism has come to denote merely a general willingness to compromise principles, even to the point of selfishness or irresponsibility.

The name we then treat as in a way supporting the group of phenomena. The low thermometer today, for instance, is supposed to come from something called the ‘climate. If pragmatism be true, it is a perfectly sound reproach unless the theories under fire can be shown to have alternative practical outcomes, however delicate and distant these may be.

Truly a brilliant work of philosophy that is too often ignored in modern American philosophy. If the truth is what works, then this book is full of truths.

Almost anything written by James is worth reading. The idea here is not "apply" anything in a very modern fashion. The journey is the reward. You just want to be beside him while he is thinking.

The bastardization of the term "pragmatism" is most unfortunate, and thus this book is certainly worthwhile reading, even for sophisticated students of philosophy, if only to disabuse them of certain widely-held misunderstandings of the approach.
