This is a training manual for street corner apologetics. The topics are given in the form of a lesson or lecture, with additional reading listed, and a set of tough questions to answer after. The information in the topics is outlined only with very little explanation. You have to do the homework for that (read the recommended texts). In order to do the homework you will have to get the reading materials which may be difficult unless you have access to a Catholic Library. Some may be available from the Catholic Truth Society.

F. J. Sheed was an excellent lay theologian and evangelist - had all his books except this Catholic Evidence which outlines his work on the streets of London and NewYork.

So glad to get it! Condition as described - used, but it would look that way anyway after I read it. Thank you!

Seems a bit outdated in many ways - and is designed for a structure apologistics program. The information is good, but very dense.

Frank Sheed (1897-1981) was an Australian layman, and Maisie Ward was his wife; they started the Sheed & Ward publishing company, and were public lecturers in the Catholic Evidence Guild. Frank wrote many other books such as Theology and Sanity,Theology for Beginners, etc.

These "outlines" are primarily intended as a resource for speakers: there is a "Course I" for "Junior Speakers," and a "Course II" for Senior Speakers. They are presented in "rough" language (e.g., with frequent incomplete sentences), and thus literal quotation from it is not recommended.

In the section on the authenticity of the Gospels, they state, "This lecture not to prove inspiration. In it the gospels to be treated as ordinary documents. The Gospel existed before the gospels, and if these had never been written or had perished, IT would stil remain. But if the existing gospels were false, Christianity would fall, as the Church has pledged herself to their credibility." (Pg. 167)

They admit, "Although reason cannot show any contradiction in the concept of three persons in one nature, we could never know from reason alone that it was so. The Trinity is wholly a matter of revelation, and though hinted at again and again in the Old Testament and implicit throughout, it belongs to the New Testament." (Pg. 178)

They observe, "The family is the main support of the State; and the Church is the main support of the family; and no other support one quarter as efficient can be found. So the Church is the great social cementing force, and this only because she moves on a level far above the merely social one." (Pg. 248) They add, "Toleration... in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, was the result, not of the Reformation, but of the general decline of religion, and was born of indifference rather than of charity." (Pg. 258)

They assert, "Protestantism means that you cannot do more than your duty; all works and aspirations fall away: Heaven for them is a nondescript equality: they could call to repentance, but could produce no spiritual literature: similarly, purgatory goes, venial sin goes, and, among consistent Protestants, sacraments went too: for if one does not believe in grace, what does baptism give?" (Pg. 285)

On the Problem of Evil, they suggest, "Do not give the crowd the impression that we know the answer: the most we can hope for is that we may make the doubter suspend judgment, the believer trust more firmly in God." (Pg. 297-298) Later, they add, "If we have the nerve to do it, we can take suffering as the key point in apologetics, as THE thing the atheist has to explain away. faced with this inescapable fact of suffering we have an answer which gives it significance." (Pg. 337)

This book is from an "earlier" era of Catholic apologetics, but it still have value for current students.
