This is the Miss Manners book that started it all, so popular it was updated in 2005 and can still be bought at a reasonable price new and downright cheap used. Of course, such infernal modern devices of dubious utility as the cell phone have intruded on the American scene since Miss Manners (Judith Martin) started writing her newspaper column in the 1970s -- but this book does a good job of staying in step with changing times. More to the point, reading Miss Manners is an exercise in high wit (hers) and common sense (hers), which results in a useful, funny volume that belongs on every bookshelf. This especially applies to those of us who like to read these books for fun. The lady can turn a phrase, and makes good points doing so.

I love this book, and it is much, much more than a dead-on book about correctness in manner. It is more than one of the funniest things ever written. It's more than just an insightful reading of the human condition. This is one of the best books of philosophy I have ever read. It explains more about man's nature as a social animal and the way society functions best as a civilization that any standard philosophy, psychology, or sociology text book. And, unlike many other philosophical treatises, it is proscriptive rather than contenting itself with being merely descriptive. Think of this as a Grand Unified Theory of anything having to do with human interaction.

I own the original hardback version, too, but the 21st Century additions of this electronic version do not intrude. After all, tech may be new; people using tools are not.

I've read Miss Manners' books off and on since I was a tween. In typical Miss Manners style she responds to questions supposedly submitted by "Gentle Readers". For those not used to her, her guidance can range from simply explanatory to poignant to bitingly critical to witty. Some remarks would make me want to laugh out loud, but I might smother the laugh into a snicker, so avoid feeling awkward about explaining to a curious questioner that I was laughing at an etiquette book.
This time I read her book with my tween and teen aged daughters in mind and gathered new ways to teach them how to protect their privacy, how to respond to inappropriate questions by others, and how and why to say "No" without guilt or lengthy explanation when appropriate. She extends the same "rules" for respectful behavior to from face-to-face, paper, and electronic communication--nice to see that in writing in her witty way since we've been trying to teach our kids those rules forever. They can be strong independent respectful and polite. They don't have to be rude to be firm.
Now, if I could just get them to use napkins...

Of course, I'm fanatical about proper manners, so I had to get this book, only to find that my manners need upgrading in many areas. I loved the spirit in which the author kindly corrected me.

My ancient copy of this book was "borrowed" (stolen) by a neighbor who had inherited her own grandmother's sterling silver but had no idea how a dinner table was set for different occasions. Actually, when I first read this book I was laughing so hard I cried---for the loss of my own grandmother who had taught me EVERY rule in this fabulous book! Hey, I still write thank you notes on my personalized stationery! When I married my husband a 5 year old girl came with the deal. I kept telling her the "rules" starting with "But grandmother Grace would do/say/wear" etc. I used the Grandmother Grace rule so often that one day, when she was in the back seat of the car, at age 11, she piped up with "so when am I going to get to meet this Grandmother Grace?" I was in the front but my right hand went straight to cover my mouth--'cause I had not told her that Grace had died in 1978--before she was even born! Made me all misty that Grace (as she told me to address her) was still telling her everything Judith Martin (Miss Manners) had ever covered. I cannot recommend it enough. It may be 2014, but when a handwritten note appears in MY mail, I am impressed, as are the people who get mine. I get phone calls to thank ME for the handwritten "thank you" note! BTW, one should never send a pre-printed thank you note, but rather, one should send a note one's personal stationery, thanking the person, with details of the event, such as "the asparagus was devine"
