Perhaps the single biggest criticism of this book is that, while it purports to be an introduction to world Christianity, virtually all of the authors are westerners. So it might be better titled, "Introducing a Western View of Christianity in the World." Also be aware that it is written primarily Protestant, mission-focused viewpoint; this is not wrong, but it is helpful to note that focus, which tends to result in mildly paternalistic theological "corrections" of other branches of Christianity. The book provides helpful background for the various geographical areas of the world (even if "The Americas" is perhaps a bit disingenuous as a heading for an entire section), but the almost exclusively western perspectives mean that you are not really getting an "insider's" understanding of how Christianity functions and is practiced in the East and the Global South.

Charles Farhadian's impressive volume makes a timely and path breaking contribution to the study of Christian movements outside of Europe and North America. Moving beyond the heavily historical and Africa-centered works of earlier authors, this volume draws insights from many disciplines. Moreover, it examines world areas that have been largely omitted from discussions of 'World Christianity', for instance, societies of the south Pacific. The novel approach that stresses the embodied practices of world Christians balances an earlier wave of scholarship that stressed the centrality of the spoken and translated word in global Christian expansion. -Chandra Mallampalli
