The director’s principal job is managing the creative process. Because film units are temporary creative systems, they have much in common with technical or scientific projects, consulting teams, task forces, and other short-term task groups. In this article we use the word creativity to mean technical as well as artistic creativity, realizing that this will overlap what others define as innovation. The notion of creativity is important because there is a high correlation between temporariness and creativity; and between permanence and routine. For this reason observations about the film unit we studied should be relevant to managers of such groups.

Managing the Creative Mind explores techniques inmanaging a team of technicians for the production ofThe Taming of the Shrew. It is also a documentationof a Technical Director's process. More than theorganization of the project, it focuses on thepeople. I wanted to experience what made thetechnicians tick and test my theories on motivationand efficiency. I kept a log of conversations andhappenings for each of the people involved in theproduction. I made assignment decisions based on myreaction to their personalities and experience. Thegoal was to make people excited to be there and, inturn, produce a forward thinking, can-do environmentwhere the production would run itself. Included is ascript analysis, statement of goals, process, evaluation, technical drawings, paperwork andphotographs.

This book was a huge disappointment. Essentially it is the authors MFA thesis; published and sold for a ridiculously high price. I teach technical direction and was looking for some sort of resource text book that would describe the management process used in our field. This was simply a description of this one production, its challenges and solutions. The narrative is only 21 pages and the supporting material is not effectively described. The flow chart for build schedules was printed too small to read. Although the work done by the author is interesting, the design is not too challenging. The publisher is less than up front about the contents of this $63 book.

While many people consider technical directors the "janitors" of theatre, this book really shows just how intelligent and studied a REAL technical director has to be.
The beginning is dry, but when you get to the end you start to understand the point. A technical director has run the entire spectrum as far as knowledge goes, but the people who really make it happen are all the artists involved. It takes a strong technical director to put their arms around a project and move it forward.
If you are a student interested in technical theatre, buy this book.

The first chapter is a lot to take in at once, but the core of the book is easy to understand. It gives someone just starting out a good jumping off point.
