Joan B. Manley, Stuart Smith, John McMinn. The truly francophone focus encourages students to compare their own cultures to the customs, perspectives and daily life of selected French-speaking communities. Its complete technology package allows students not only to see and hear authentic communication in French, but also to practice their French in a convenient self-correcting environment.

HORIZONS makes learning French easier through its step-by-step, skill building approach to the communicative classroom. Through interactive, varied activities and clear grammar explanations, students are able to communicate effectively in French while culturally connecting themselves to the Francophone world.

This is a very helpful textbook. It has many great features that other textbooks lack:
1. It uses English explanations. I've taken classes where the teacher used a book that was written entirely in French. The problem with that type of text is that I spent most of my time looking up word definitions in order to just understand what was being taught and therefore has less time to actually study! It was very frustrating.
2. At the bottom of each page, Horizons includes the definitions of new words presented on that page so I don't have to waste time trying to find the meaning.
3. As the lessons progress, previously taught vocabulary and concepts are imbedded within new concepts, so that students are constantly reviewing.
4. There are many exercises that promote listening and speaking, in addition to reading and writing. I want to be able to have conversations with French speakers, so I like this feature.
4. At the end of each chapter is a two page review of grammar taught in that chapter, which is very handy for reviewing. Following that is a list of vocabulary learned in each competence. I copy these pages, cut them lengthwise by competence, and carry them around with me for quick reviews.
5. It comes with a CD for listening practice. You can also buy a workbook for written exercises.

All in all, I would say this is the best text I've used. I've taken French several times throughout my life and this is my favorite textbook by far.

Manley (2011) is a pretty good french book. If I had done the assigned readings before the day of an exam and not relied on my instructor's poor style and teaching philo I would have probably done better. The book explains language pretty well.

But let's be honest: you're not buying this book because you want to learn french. You're buying it because it's on a booklist.

Buy it used. Seriously. Don't let the bookstore's online component combo scare you away. You can buy the book used then buy a 3-term quia pack for like $60.

That's it. Bon chance!

Bought this for a course and I found the exercises very straightforward which helped me greatly. I ended up with an A in the class and undoubtedly, the textbook being easy to follow along was a great help.

The text is based on an immersion theory -- relatively little English is used to explain the lessons beyond the initial instructions. Reading the lesson directions thus becomes an exercise in itself. The dialogue exercises place the reader in everyday events, as if he or she were encountering the situation in France. The book also includes generous information about the French culture -- introductions to cities and regions are comprehensive and included before each chapter.

This is a fast-paced, full-throated look at French and all its nuances.

This book was precisely what was needed for my daughter's course.
The book was cheap... Like a really great price! I could not believe it. Shipping was very fast even though I was a tad-bit upset since I did not have a tracking number. I would really recommend this store.
