The Pythons' second book was even denser than their first, with even more creative use of graphics, fonts and inserts. There was also a higher percentage of new material – including a parody of teen magazines – not inspired or adapted from the TV series.

Monty Python was born in May 1969, at the Light of Kashmir tandoori restaurant in Hampstead, where five Brits (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin) and an American (animator Terry Gilliam) first sat down to discuss working together on a new BBC comedy series. At the same time they also released a string of hugely-popular vinyl albums, masterfully seizing the full imaginative potential of the audio medium. ‘Matching Tie and Handkerchief’ was the first three-sided record album). It is impossible to overestimate the importance of these items.

As a television show, "Monty Python's Flying Circus" offered not just laughs but untethered flights of imagination involving such things as summarizing Proust competitions and people exploding for no reason. On screen, stage, and record, it was often too difficult to get this anarchic quality over. But the story is different in book form: "The Brand New Monty Python Bok" has creative anarchy spilling out of its ears.

Nearly every page of "Brand New" has something brand new on offer. The first page is a list of safety instructions beginning with "Do not open this book." The last page presents you with "Teach Yourself Surgery" with copious bloodstains.

There is a mystery story involving Rene Descartes which devolves into a series of wallpaper samples, and an advertisement for the British Apathy League which urges you not to join. Another ad, for the Welsh martial art Llap-Goch: "The BEST way to protect yourself AGAINST any ASSAILANT is to ATTACK him before he attacks YOU...or BETTER...BEFORE the THOUGHT of doing so has EVEN OCCURRED TO HIM!!!"

Some bits are recognizable from the TV show, like the "Watney's Red Barrel" speech Eric Idle recited in neverending fashion as a jaded tourist. I think it runs on longer here than it ever did on screen or stage. There's also a review of Sam Peckinpah's lost classic "Salad Days," featuring stills from the famously gory sketch. For the most part, though, what you get here is new material.

One knock on "Bok" is that it is a bit more mired in the time it came out, 1973, than the show ever was. There are a lot of references to contemporary figures like Richard Nixon and Rolf Harris which do date the work, even if it has nostalgia value for those of us who can remember when the book was new. There is also a rather lengthy fairy-tale farce which overstays its welcome, unusual for a book which keeps changing its style and format with every page (and sometimes within a single page.)

Be warned that this isn't the family-friendly Python of the early years, but the smutty, filthy, gutter-minded Python we all grew to love after Western moral standards collapsed for good. You get a catalog of sex toys, a deodorant-obsessed magazine for young women, and the unforgettable sight of the late Graham Chapman standing up for the "Right To Mast."

It's a shame Monty Python only did something like this before ("Monty Python's Big Red Book") and never again. Dated, dirty, but never boring, "Brand New Bok" is a worthy exemplar of their unique brand of all-out wit and whimsy.
