20 percent during 1979–2003, while primary energy use per square foot decreased by 6 percent. The last item is a key factor in the decline in energy intensity of buildings over the past 30 years. For example, the average electricity use of new refrigerators sold in 2007 was 71 percent less than that of new refrigerators sold in 1977 (AHAM, 2008), despite their becoming larger and having more features.
