Lone Journey Toward Wisdom. Stipe Grgas - 2004 - Filozofska Istrazivanja 94 (3-4):1055-1057. Retranslation as a Socially Engaged Activity: The Case of The Rape of Nanking.

Now we’re beginning the next stage of the journey. The guiding principle of this reporting is one we have developed-city by city, story by story, question by question, surprise by surprise-through our years of travel. The central premise is that the most positive and practical developments in this stage of American life are happening at the local and regional level-but that most Americans have barely heard of those developments except in the communities where they themselves live.

In this book the author wrestles with the giants of human thought with whom he journeyed throughout his life. In the company of Schopenhauer, Thoreau, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Merton, he has developed resistance to a sense of the futility of existence. Basically an optimist and an ardent believer, the author was forced by life's circumstances to travel through many dark valleys wherein the right path was not always visible. Although often lost in dark forests, he fought bravely to reach the light at the end of the road.
This book is part of a trilogy by the same author for which many of us have been waiting for quite some time. Will there be a fourth book? Who can say? It follows Journey of a Soul, and Diary of a Troubled Mind, but it is also a complete work that can be read and enjoyed all on its own. It is supposed to be a diary of the author, but really, it is more than that. It is a critical philosophical evaluation and analysis of the works of Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Merton, all in one. What more can one ask for? Professor Mlikotin gives us here, as in all his other books, years of scholarship and research, unmatched by many in the field. In this book we get a glimpse into the mind and soul of a man of integrity, and a rare college professionalism at its very best. But we also see the weakness of an honest soul as Mlikotin finds himself unable to cope with the petty office politics of academia and the machinations of the University. There is a lot one can learn from this book. I recommend this book very highly.
This book is totally honest and written from the heart. A man of integrity writes beautifully about his life and the help that he got from his great fellow travelers. He describes how his fellow solitaries helped heal his spirit. This book, so rich in truth and meaning, is like a star above the flatland of contemporary talk.
