Robert Jackson (b. 1941) is a prolific author of military and aviation history, having become a full-time writer in 1969. As an active serviceman in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve he flew a wide range of aircraft, ranging from jets to gliders. An enjoyable little book. Using a lot of anecdotes and lots of background information, Jackson tells the overall story of the WWII era air warfare by breaking it into very digestible, informative, but not exhaustive chapters.

This book details the development of the fighter in the Spanish Civil War and World War I. I thought this book a good introduction to the air warfare of World War II. It certainly was deadly business, with the various aircraft.

There are eleven chapters detailing the various air battles over Spain, Poland, France, England, North Africa, China, the Soviet Union, and Germany. Since this book is roughly 160 pages, there is only introductory information on the general nature of the combat.
