The first book in Robertson Davies’ celebrated Deptford Trilogy, Fifth Business stands alone as the story of a rational man who discovers that the marvelous is only another aspect of the real. Published as an eBook for the first time. Fifth Business, which one critic said was as masterfully executed as anything in the history of the novel, might be described simply as the life of a schoolteacher named Dunstan Ramsay.

My husband and I both read and enjoyed this book. It is sad and hilarious and even confusing. Growing up in a dysfunctional family in San Francisco California is the theme. The period and setting resonate with many of us who had interesting and challenging childhood to adolescent years in the 1960's.

That crazy time in San Francisco is well articulated. The city was and is indeed unique. Many of IZ's dilemmas are universal, however often IZ's reactions to his challenges, and his very thought processes, are unusual to say the least. IZ was a prodigy, that explains things.
I got a giant kick out of Iz, and the sequel, Iz Too, which I read all in one night. Loved it.
They're about a teenager figuring it all out for himself, and the stories seem so much to get the time and place right- when we were inventing for ourselves how to be alive in a screwed up, messy world...
But the best part is Iz, what a great teenager. I was so much rooting for him, as he seems to get himself in deeper and deeper, and then the conflicts and the music and the sex and the story all spin into this dynamite ending in Iz Too...
I guess it strikes me as so lovely and sexy and upbeat because it is so much about the mysteriousness and pleasure of the creative process. Everybody's making babies or music or writing or art, and the story seems so alive.
Anyway, just what I needed to read.
It took me awhile to start Iz Too, I didn't think the author could top IZ...
They're both amazing. Classics. I want to write like that.
This is a great little novel. It perfectly describes the flavor of San Francisco from the point of view of a San Franciscan native. A kind of "right of passage" through the streets of SF of a young man and his quirky, to say the least, family. It includes a little intrigue and a little sex and a fast-moving plot. I highly recommend it!

This is a great book for people of any age. It gives the reader insight into how the author views the world. Althought Robert Davis was my english teacher, and i liked all the books that he recommended and wrote. I think that this is a really good book because it shows how a teenager struggles to figure out what he wants to do with his life. I'm going through the same in my life right now, and this book really helped.
This is an amazing book: you will have hard time to leave it, and once you'll finish it, IZ will stay with you for a LONG time! Thanks to the author, there is a sequel! SEVERELY recommend to all the people who want to couple a good laugh with a masterful narrative and a real esprit de finesse. Robert Davis at his best!
This book is about a thirteen year old boy named Isador Aronson (Iz). Iz was trying to find out who he wants to be in the future throughout this book. He knew he does not want to be a sucker, but everything he does seems to turn him into one. At first, Iz wanted to be an operator like his father, but later he discovered that he was talented at playing the piano. Although, he was talented, he was nothing compared to the other musical prodigies out there. So, he gave up being a musical prodigy. Then, he tried to be a thief. But he was not successful at being a thief either. After exploring what he was good at, he finally went back to playing the piano. At the end, not only was he able to play the piano without taking any piano lessons before, he was also able to compose his own music. I like this book because it shows how confuse some teenagers could be of what to become in the future. I was, and still am confused of what I want to be. So, I will, like Iz, try to find out what I am good at and what I want to be through my college life.
